Ok so I saw this on Facebook and saved a picture wanting to make one myself. I made this one tonight. My wife is setting up a booth at a sportsman's show in a few weeks and I will be making a few more to sell along with her things. Each one will be unique as they all have different posts, wire, ect. The skull will not be included with the sale. My question is what would you expect and be willing to pay for this?
That's really cool! It would make a great entrance piece at the beginning of our walkway coming towards the house.
I'd love to give you a price, but decorating is not my strong point... That being said I know people that pay high dollar for cool unique items like this! I'd start at top dollar if it were me....
Kind of sorta depends on the clientele. Like you said when you saw it I would think man I could make that, but you get people that don't want to get their hands dirty and wives that will buy it for their husbands. It's pretty cool looking and would be neat inside or out.
Go for 125. Having to balance your price point versus your time and material can be tricky. Can you make some to mount on a wall? Maybe use a slab of barnboard? They look good, and you could open up a few more customers with different options.
My gut sees a $149 price tag on that. To the guy paying 400+ for a shoulder mount, $150 for the post and $100 for the euro mount ( or diy) is still a substantial savings comparatively speaking. I've got a couple deer that imho, aren't worth a shoulder mount but deserve more than just a plain euro mount. I've done the mounts already and something like this is just the way to show it off instead of just a routed board.
That's cool. I, personally, wouldn't pay a lot for it but I'm sure there are those who will. Pricing this type of stuff is hard, but I'd start at $150. If you see a lot then maybe up it some, if they don't move drop it some. If you are set up at a sportsman show you have a better chance at moving them...so $175 wouldn't be out of the question. I know my wife wouldn't let the leaves in the house, but if you put some stone, or even pine straw, on the bottom that might be more appealing to some.
Its close to the same size as the pic I saw on facebook. The one I saw also had some grass growing up around the post.
How many do you plan on creating for the sportsman show? And will they be identical or vary in style? I'm sure there is a market for this kind of art(?) but I'm wondering if a person willing to pay for something like This would want it more custom? Sorry, I'm just having a hard time getting a grip on this.
Each would be a little different, different posts and barb wire depending on what I can find. People seemed to really like the posts and a few commented that they would like it with a duck or turkey hanging from it in a dead hanging mount. I like that idea, and I think I can beef if up a bit to hang a deer mount on. I think the post needs to be bigger though for a full deer mount.
They are from deer I've shot. You can buy skulls and mounts but not cheap. That skull on eBay would sell for $125-150 and the mount about $400-800
Missed a few points of yours earlier. As far as making it custom we can do a few things. The leaves in the bottom can also have switch grass added. In the deer mount picture you can see it laying there to the right. And the leaves can be traded out for other things, looking into other options now. Need to go to a craft shop, can also put deer sheds on the base over leaves, an old trap, ect. So far people I've personally talked to said they would be willing to spend $75-$150 on it. I also know a lot of guys like myself would just copy the idea. But what I'm banking on is the guy that doesn't have time/skill to make it or simply doesn't have the material. It's hard to find a weathered out fence post and rusty barb wire. That isn't something y can go to a store and buy. I did talk to one person that was thinking more like $20 but honestly there's more material in it than that. And I dot think that person is the guy that has a deer skull at home that isn't displayed well. I am looking for the buyer that sees the post and immediately thinks oooooo I like that, that would look great in my man cave.
As I was going through your last post, the same thought you had at the end came to mind, funny... A piece like this with a hunter having the skull of his own would be the perfect buyer, he could put something like this in his man cave, perfect. Ok, now I'm on the same page as you, I was having the hardest time thinking of where you would display something like this. So as you prepare for the sportsmans show you can get a few decent pics of your finished piece(s) and have something to maybe use for ebay, CL or a local ad and here even. I'd be curious to see what kind of interest the show get you. Good luck and TY!
Thanks, I need to figure out how many to make. Originally I was thinking 3-4 but everyone seems to love them, maybe I should make 7-8. Custom stuff like that is hard to guess on though. One item could sell out really fast and another not sell at all.
Great idea! One suggestion a friend said to me was to hang a few different signs behind it. Welcome to our cabin, hunters welcome, no trespassing, ect
Yea, that dull shoulder mount on out looks stupid. Around here rusty barn wire is not hard to find...weathered out posts aren't either...there just old half rotted cedar posts. I have miles of old rusty barbed wire on my farm. Like so old you have to know were it is in the woods to find it
