Good bye Cottonwood LOL ! Trying out my latest project. A very nice made in Slovenia Husqvarna 61 ! Aparently Husky's hate Ash .... And Cottonwood ! Saw runs great. Over 160 psi comp. New clutch assembly and 7 tooth rim. New oiler gear... Air filter... Spark plug... Fuel lines... 20 inch bar and chain.. And the list goes on and on ! Anyway.... Our forestry plan shows that all these tall Cottonwood trees have done there job gettin the hardwoods tall and straight. But now the canopies are shading things out... So down they gotta go. Probably 100 of these trees over 60 acres.... So its a long term project. Gonna let most lay where they are to rot.. As no one wants to burn these. We are spoiled in hardwood country ! These will be fun with the 550xp and 545
Nice! Good looking saw and glad it hates wood! Love my old 61 - I think mine is an 83' - what year is your 61? Cheers!
Nice! Do you cut much cotton wood? I have some that I got in the last load of firewood that I thought looked like cotton wood, but it has dark heartwood. Does all cotton wood have the ash type coloring throughout it?
Is it right that cottonwood will rot fast laying on the ground? Sounds like a good thing to do with that kinda tree - let it become compost for the forest floor, heheh.
I must be a Husqy, I hate cottonwood. Crap on you 4 or 5 times thru the seasons. I've even helped cut neighbors cottonwoods down for them, free. So many around , when they cotton here in the summer, it's like snow
Nice Husky! It's a shame you don't know anyone who needs some quick drying wood for next year. It also makes great kindling!
Worst part about working up green cottonwood is that 50% of the weight you are moving is the water in the tree. Full stroke splitting, heavy when wet-light when dry, bad heat value and stinks when you burn it. Can you tell it's not my favorite? It is THE one wood I avoid. It does punk up quick out in the weather. Good on you for taking the task to let the others grow on. We spent 2 months on a farm cutting grapevines and treating them so the trees wouldn't be all tangled together. Night and day difference now. May not seem like it now but you'll be glad you spent the time later.
Nice saw !! The cottenwood is my least desired, granted I have about a full cord of it left I use it for shoulder and fire starting. My profile with my saw is one of the upper limbs. I paid for that full cord that sht is hard to move hard to split and hard to dry.
Death to cottonwoods!!!! The only place for them are places where trees are scarce, or there is pollution in the soil. Can't stand them and they are almost no good for firewood.
Cottonwood- Nebraska state tree ( not the phone pole ) Can get to be humongous & shed enough " cotton" in spring-summer that it looks like it's snowing. Low BTU's , hard to split, heavy when wet. My least favorite firewood. Tree guy called ... Said he had good news & bad news. " I ask what's the bad news ?" Tree guy says " dropped a load of cottonwood at your place" "What's the good news ?" He says" there is plenty of it!
I wonder if cottonwood is any worse than Buckeye? I have been heating my house all of this season on a mix of buckeye and pine. Edit: I just checked and Buckeye is less btu's than Cottonwood but they are close in comparison. So far no problems getting 11 hour burns and keeping the house warm. I also love the Buckeye for quick hot fast burn the coal down fires.
Thanks ! We have had nothing but Ash,Maple,Cherry and sometimes oaks to cut the last 20 years...as our woods is riddled with those ! We usually let the Cotton wood and Poplars go till they fall and just leave em . We tried to burn a little of it one year . Stinks bad when burning for some reason . Is hard to burn sometimes as it always seems to soak up moisture rather than get rid of it ! I can hear it rotting as soon as I cut it Its a shame...cuz the hoarder in me is having a hard time just letting these lay . I just cut these in firewood lengths today to test out the 61..........but will probably just letting them lay from here on out . Its a shame PS...all theCotton wood I have cut has been Ash colored on the inside . Seems like when the heartwood is darker....its actually starting to rot in those areas .
I know right Im gonna talk to a few more guys up the road who have outdoor wood burners . Usually those guys will throw anything in !!!
I can definetly tell you dont like it !! As for the grapevines....(Devil's root I call it !" .... we started tackling that about 10 years ago ! WHat an experience that has been We finally got some stuff that kills em pretty good....but one has to be ever vigilant with those rotten boogers !! But like you say...it makes a difference in a short amount of time !!
