Emptied a section of the wood shed on the weekend. So that means time for a hoarder's delight. Found some really nice old growth fir broken ends! Just love the Splitter. Time to leave. The wood shed holds 10 cords. The shed is divided up so each 1/4 section holds 2 1/2 cords - the same amount fits into the boiler room!
From the red color, I'm guessing that's Doug fir. Good wood, great find! They don't leave much behind here, it all gets chipped for co-gen.
Can you always find piles of wood like that? Around here they usually leave the slash in the forest, making it a lot harder to scrounge firewood after a timber cut.
They do send a small amount by comparison to the chip plant, but even self loading logging trucks need a supply of bunk and stake length logs to make loads which there are not many left after the initial loading of market value logs. The semi type box trailers that could pack these short logs and chunks cannot climb the steep grades empty and if they can, are unable to turn around. So until they can overcome these obstacles, I will just keep feasting!
These piles are very common in the second growth settings and in places where semi type box trailers and trucks can gain access, these piles get picked up. These pictures below are of high elevation old growth and these logs will be eventually loaded and taken to the chip plant. Farther down the hill, there is a slide across the road making these loads not accessible. The logging trucks that haul these logs are small owner operators that do not have the road building equipment to fix the roads for themselves, so they have to wait for the parent company to go back to the area and fix the roads then these logs will be loaded for a trip to the chip plant.
Looking awesome. Beautiful pictures, the splitter, wood, views..... so when are you building another 4 woodsheds?? lol
There's always Granny (MIL) Her emergency stash by the basement door! Shed #1. Shed # 2. Shed#3. Back-end of sheds #3 & #4 Front of shed #4. In basement storage in the room next to the furnace. Granny in action!
My GOD! Theres more wood in those pictures than in the whole dam state of NJ, I think the word scrounging was invented here….
Beautiful pictures inspecter. I like my job too but right now I wish I had more time to work on my firewood. Overall I'm blessed man though.
