What's the worst thing/things that are done to saws in y'all's opinions??? I've only really operated 1 saw in my life, and it was a "hand-me-down" from my Dad. It's the saw in my signature. I've operated other saws quite frequently................but they've not been "treated" like I treat mine. What do y'all say???
I guess the worst is straight gassing them. Other than that, plenty of people just don't take care of them. Filters, plugs, etc get neglected, people use old motor oil as bar oil and so on
Sat one down one time and ran it over with a dozer. A buddy put diesel fuel in one once. Ran but smoked like all get out. Not has bad as straight gas I guess. Dropped on once from about 20' up a pole. Soft ground at least seemed ok.
How do those Home Depot rental saws wind up look like they do???? Looks like some renters drag them behind their trucks to a from the store!!!!
When my youngest son was doing his Eagle Scout project we were putting up a nice vinyl picket fence around a cemetary where a Revolutionary War and a Civil War veteran were buried. We had to cut a huge root about a foot under ground to make way for a fence post. So I used an old chain on my MS290 to cut it after clearing away as much dirt and rock as possible. That was definitely saw abuse and chain murder.
I've ran over saws with tractors, one with a dozer and once with my atv. Had them fall off when on top of a load. Last year I threw one about 20 feet as I was falling backward. A once in a million shot; a stick got right under the hood and broke the carb so had to put a new one on. I did one put a chain on backward. Think I was talking at the time I installed it. Then wondered why it would cut. I was a bit red faced but it didn't take long to fix that one.
Lowes has a deal on Husqvarna saws that if you are not satisfied with the saw bring it back for full refund. So Ebay is full of temporarily used saws being sold as factory refurbished saws like on a husq model 455 can be found refurbed for $100-$120 cheaper. free shipping and no tax.
I hate when that happens. I ran over an o44 with my F700 about 10 years ago. Replaced it with a used 460 that I'm still using.
Just last fall, as I was turning onto the highway from a logging road and looked into the mirror, I noticed something orange and white sliding on the blacktop! Seems the bouncy ride on the rough road from the "site" was enough to move the saw back to the tailgate that "someone" never closed. And if that isn't enough for you, I am a firm believer in using drain oil for the bar. Been that way for years and years! Don't try arguing about it, I ain't giving it up.
Reminds me of a man I used to work for years ago. He once lost a small 70lb. anvil out of the back of his pickup. Only difference being is that it fell THRU the rusted out bed and not off an open tailgate!!!! He never found it either!!! Imagine hitting that in the road!!!
I was pretty red-faced about the whole incident and glad no-one saw it? Until I picked up the mail the next week and was asked..."Was that you on the highway...." Yup, busted!
I'm the same way. I haven't bought "bar oil" in over 15 years. With 7 vehicles that need the oil changed, I couldn't see giving it away anymore. Just run it through a paint strainer and you're good to go.
When I ran the electric to my shed I used an old homelite to cut my trench and all the rocks/ roots/ dirt to get my wire down deep enough. I pretty much wore the teeth right off of the chain but it definitely saved me time and swinging a mattock. It was a cheap 14-16" model that seemed to cut through dirt way quicker than it ever cut through wood.
I buy oil by the barrel. I have 3 diesel engines so I get a barrel of 15w-40 and run it in all the vehicles. On a side note; I'm really happy to see the price of oil coming down. I only have about 5 gallon left so I'll need to get another barrel in the spring.
