My wife got me a small 'stack-on' gun safe until I can afford the better one we need sometime this spring. The safe has an electronic lock and for the money it seems ok for now. My dilemma is that I don't like that beep noise everytime I press the keypad to open it. If I'm in a hurry to open it I don't want anyone to know where I am and what I'm doing if it's an emergency. Has anyone been able to disable the keypad audio on a gun safe?
well if ya can get into the electronics ya can cut the lead to the beeper. won't hurt a thing. more likely that it might be a direct mount on the board which means either unsoldering it or cutting the circuit trace. Never liked the idea of electronic lock- Battery operated- to me like a flashlight never seems to work when ya need it. Prefer KISS principal. Never had one, is there a way to gain access if electronics go down?
There is a key if the default electronics should fail. My concern is one of the safes is in our master BR and if I need to go 5 steps to the safe to gain firearm access I want it quiet and I don't want to spin a dial. I just want the beeps to stop and I don't care about voiding any warranties.
I'm sure you checked, but there isn't anything written in the manual regarding an alarm over ride setting. Perhaps holding a certain button down for a small length of time? I get your concern totally......
That was one of the first things I looked for after hearing it made noises. Nothing was found in the 1 page manual on silent mode or "the bad guy can hear you opening your gun safe lock" from downstairs mode.
Do you have children around? I too find it hard to believe that such an alert would notify anyone within earshot that the safe is being accessed!
I was able to find some information in Stack-On's website in order to silence the keypad. I don't have any kids in the house any longer , my 2 are 25 and 23. And I do like the safe monitor that someone posted on another thread that advises the safe owner of any and all safe conditions. That may be worth the money in itself as another tool to keeping the safe 'safe'.
After my 2 boxers sound off, and then the house alarm goes off the safe beeps would be the least of my worries. Or should I say the bad guys worries.
GrJfer , funny you should say that, my two boxers would do the same thing. I don't have a house alarm but the concerns would be the gun safe over most anything else.
Without children in the house, why would you have all your weapons locked up? Don't you have a "ready" gun?
Good question. Mass Law wants the firearms that aren't locked up to have a trigger lock on them, I won't do that, won't work in an emergency. I did have one in an hidden accessible place unlocked for the longest time but my wife was not comfortable with it like that anymore so the next best thing for her peace of mind was a quick access safe. So thats what she got me for x-mas. I'm just trying to get used to the new idea of it being in a new place and a few more seconds to get at it. I'll PM you with a little more that I can't post here
Good thread here, I would do the same and dismantle the beep. But I also keep a ready gun so I wouldn't need to go for the safe. Dogs are also a great way to keep bad guys away and you alert when someone is near.
A definite on the dogs. Only need barkers, not mean biter dogs though. Once the dogs start barking, the homeowner takes over.....
And the bad guy is usually leaving once the barking starts. We just adopted a dog from the shelter and that was a big reason. Kids wanted a pet, I wanted an alarm system.
Gun safes are for storage and controlled environment only IMHO. If you're awoken at 0:dark30 to your dogs barking and sounds of someone in your house; are you gonna have your wits about you to 1. remember the combination and 2. and a steady enough hand to operate it???? If I ever had to shoot an invader in my house, one or all of my Labs would probably want to go retrieve the POS.
