I only split by hand too... with levers and motors and... stuff... ... I still sweat a lot... does that count...
Thanks. They are starting to look more stable with each time I do it. I never have top covered before, but I may give covering the ash/elm a shot. The elm I'm using this year seasoned for two and half years and I'm starting to run across some punky stuff so it looks like top covering would have helped.
Top covers are hard to keep on in some areas if it's real windy, but should stop it from getting punky. Birch here gets punky fast if it gets rewetted from rain & snow after it's dry. Maple & a few other types seem to do the same.
I came across an old cover that went to an inexpensive above ground pool. I think I will cut into strips and tack them down over the elm/ash stacks. Got out with the dogs today for a short while and started splitting for the next stack of ash/elm. Not much done yet, but you have to start from somewhere. It's laying against the one end of my silver maple shoulder season stack. It was perfect weather for splitting, 20 and no wind but a honeydew list called me in.
Thanks....funny. First thing my girl said when I got home was to ask me to start a fire. The temp in the house was all the way down to 68. LOL. Spoiled with wood heat!
