So here is a little primer on Arlo and Alice's Restaurant. "The song is about Alice". The restaurant was in a church. They had a lot of room in the church as all the pews were taken out, but they didn't empty the garbage too often. (really) So, after a fabulous meal, Arlo filled up the van and tried to go to the dump. but the dump was closed as it was Thanksgiving. So they found another pile of garbage and rather than bring that garbage up to where they were, theu dumped there's onto the first pile. Officer Obie to 27 8X10 color glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back explaining what each one was, but it was a typical case of blind justice and Arlo was found guilty and had to pay $50 and pick up the garbage.

Then Arlo got his notice to show up at the draft board. He did, but they didn't think he was moral enough to join this man's army and go to Vietnam, because of his littering offense. So they made him go sit on the group W bench. That's where they put ya if your not morale enough due to your special crime.

    You had to be there..

You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant, 'ceptin' Alice..

This one is a later version and also expands on the "Just wanna ride on my motorsickle" song. You are a true collector if you know and understand the significance of the pickle.

Close. Alice didn't live in the restaurant, she lived in a church. Therefore, the restaurant wasn't in the church, they were just having thanksgiving there, in her home.

Thanks! This one goes back to Woodstock at the end of this burning season for evaluation but I'm pretty sure we're going to receive a production run unit after that to replace this one.

Ok, stove top is 28" wide, 23 1/2" deep and on the highest leg setting is 35 1/2" tall. On this Beta unit there is about 4" of adjustment on the legs so minimum height would be ~31" on this particular unit. Production dimensions could vary a bit from this stove.

Length from mid-flue collar to the front of the stove 18 1/2." (On this stove the flue collar is 8" and its 22 1/2" from the back of the top flue collar to the front of the stove.) Height from floor to top of 8" rear flue opening is 34" or (30" to its center).

Getting back to you, BBAR, see my responses in blue:

Some questions/requests when you have a moment:

    1. Pics of the inside of the firebox
See photos below. Firebox measures 22" wide, 18" deep, 11" tall at rear of secondary air plate, 15" tall at front of secondary air plate.
    2. Do you keep this stove or do you have to return it so they can inspect it?
We will return it so they can inspect it. Tom said they'd then give us one of the production run stoves to replace this one.
    3. Do you have reports you need to fill out as a beta tester?
Nothing formal. Tom said to use it, abuse it, and report in if anything breaks and otherwise just send in informal remarks on its performance and any concerns or recommended improvements.
    4. Post pics of the size of the splits you are using.
See photos below. Wood is a mix of cherry, ash and locust, well seasoned. This wood averages 16" in length, and was CSS with our Fireview in mind.
    5. What is the size of your house and how insulated is it?
Old middle class (steel mill worker) neighborhood, house is about 80 years old, no insulation really except some in attic. Probably about 1600-1800' living space: Large living room (where stove is located) with french doors into large combined dining room and kitchen area, enclosed and finished front and rear porch on first floor, 3 mid sized bedrooms and bath on second floor, full finished attic which serves as bedroom for my two sons.
    6. How well did the Fireview work for you and what type of burn times were you getting out of it?
More than adequate in shoulder season and mild winter weather, struggled to keep up when it got into the teens, had to supplement with the Natural gas furnace with hot water radiators below the low teens. If we loaded the firebox full at 11:00pm, we had more than enough coals to light another fire at 8:00am, and stove top was consistently 250-300 in AM.

The holes are slotted for adjustment and there is a shallow notch to permit the door to stay open a bit while building a fire in addition to the closer deeper notch to close the door tight. door catch.jpg

Also quite intricate design. Is this also one of the areas of potential customization they talk about? Or do they intend to offer more than one possible design of this component?

They'll put whatever design you want on the andirons, hinges, leg covers and stove top trivets and they will mix and match colors at customer's request.

Tom said that if a customer sends in a design, they have in house artists and software that can convert the customer's request into a command for the water jet cutter in less than two hours, with no need for engineers or machinists to get involved until the steel blank gets put on the cutter for the production run.

Oh yeah, some folks thought the moose stove was ridiculous?

They've already had a request for and sold one just like the Beta Moose stove on their blog to a big game lodge. Crazy as a fox.
