Started up a big oak job (last big job of the year before the Holidays), we have a total of 9 trees to bring down on the property. The two biggest oaks in the backyard were fouling the house, so I had to climb both of 'em (around 50' up) and bring them down in pieces....... didn't get too many pictures, it was a fast paced morning on Saturday getting the biggest one down. It was around 70' tall, had a triple crown, and was around 32" diameter at the base. I had hopes it was a veneer log but, as we usually do with trees near houses, we found metal in it....... One good thing is I finally got to "test drive" the Archer Pro bar I bought on ebay (made in Australia), solid machined bar with replaceable tip. I bought this 25" bar after finding a fantastic deal on a pile of 25" full chisel chains........and the bar is a great deal at $30.00 plus 10 bucks shipping on ebay!! The power company is coming to the jobsite on Friday morning to drop the lady's service out of the way so we can fall 6 big leaners that are fouling the line badly. I was going to climb them, but to keep costs down I explained it'd be way cheaper to get the line out of the way so we could straight drop the trees. I would have liked to get a bucket truck in there, but she lives on the edge of a steep hollow and there is no way to get a truck in her small, steep front yard.....so they are coming down whole!! I'll post pics this weekend.
Man you cut more firewood in a Saturday than I get done in a month! Way to go, congrats on that nice oak, it will burn well in 3 years.
After this job, my cutting partner will officially be around 3 years ahead, and I'll be close to 5 1/2 years ahead! Once I get this stuff split and piled up in the garden, I'll have enough to refill what I use this entire coming winter!! I'll be able to start "picking and choosing" wood to save for myself, then. Sell the "lesser" stuff and keep the "primo" stuff.....
Sounds like we need to create another category for "wood snobbery" ...Nice work Scotty. Looks like you've been keeping busy--and with BIG trees!
Nice straight grain trunk. Would've made some nice lumber But will make some great firewood Be fun to split . Hope your saws miss the metal.
Don't you just hate it when you have a great lumber/veneer potential log & --- metal. Bummer!!! Did you dull a chain on it or were you able to find out about it ahead of time. Around us the mill don't even want to look at a log that came from a yard or was within arm's reach of a fence line.
Oliver, missed the metal with the saw, found lots of blue streeaking in one side of the tree. I've got a big stack of white oak boards from several logs I milled so I'm not too upset. Plus I have 9 big white oak logs up in the woods on the farm so I'll get more boards from them, possibly this winter if I can get them out of the woods.
