I chose to go bigger than 20" since this will be my big saw of the two saw plan and a 20" has proven insufficient for all logs encountered, see my profile pic. Also I use a mango marker and want to be able to buck the log without bending over. In that case I might only be using the last 12" of the 28". Just the tip as they say. I measured the length of bar that would not hit the ground when I hold the saw vertical.

Does that he filter kit work with the matte black plastics?

But seriously, nice saw. I think I'm going to try out the nwp kit on mine.

I've run the 28" enough on 64cc. It certainly gets the job done.

    I'd still gut the cat.

Filter kit comes with a whole new rear cover. Mine is shiny, just like the picture. Only I have a Husqvarna bar.

Ditching this cylinder for a NWP is throwing money away (IMO). The quality of the oem 64cc topend and the NWP 84cc topend are worlds apart. Also, your oem topend wont bring squat on Ebay (at least mine didnt, 10 bucks or so under auction). The 6401 in stock form is the real deal, but if you want to go bigger... I wouldnt consider anything but the 79cc Mahle topend.
I know you have already received similar advice, but wanted to throw in my .02 because I have been in your shoes- and wanted to save you a couple bucks.

I pulled out the foam in the breather and pushed a small wire through the duck bill. The saw runs as it should now.

I wonder if you reverse that if it will continue to run correctly. It is possible the duckbill was glued shut from fuel varnish deposited while the saw sat around.

I don't think the saw ever had fuel in it. It looked completely clean and the bar never had a chain run around it. Problem from the factory possibly? It could be a fluke but 3 times in a row the saw would loose power in a cut, then just bog. I opened the fuel cap while the saw was running and it would run again for a minute or 2. I ran 2 tanks through it today without issue.
