Looking at dropping cable

I think you were up higher than just one soapbox!!!

Main thing is to cut costs for something we don't get a lot of benefit out of. As discussed by a lot on this thread, most of the channels and shows we never watch, so why not pay less for what we do watch.

The biggest thing that will hurt as has been discussed is the sports....or shall I say sport. I'm a HUGE Formula 1 fan and that will probably hurt the most, but even that really doesn't add a lot of quality to my life. Too much of TV is just a "void filler".

In fact I suggested to my wife that without TV we would have more time for "us". Unfortunately I have a horrible poker face and she immediately saw right through that!

 

Yeah I used to love to watch Patriots games but I can't really do that anymore now that we cancelled cable. I think that point that I was trying to make wasn't that watching TV necessarily makes on a bad person but that we'd generally be better off as a society if we cut back on the TV watching and other mindless entertainment.

 

Well said and completely agree....now leave me a lone so I can go watch "Real Housewives of New York"

Some sporting events can be streamed for free. Depends on the contracts and networks.

 

Two reasons, first is to cut costs. While I don't consume much tv, my wife and kids have some shows they enjoy. My list of stations are pretty short in my opinion.

Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime all over a more affordable option to cable. Most us already pay for internet service which is what you need in order to stream Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime. That would allow us to cut the cord with the tv portion of our package. Currently we have phone, tv and internet through Verizon FIOS. We are already moving to get rid of the home phone. Next will be the TV when I can provide all what I am looking for in the manner of content.

The other reason is that each month I pay a monthly fee for tons of content I'll never watch. Yet it's all bundled into my bill. Even if the cable company were to go Al la carte, you'd still have stations bundled together that I don't want to pay for.

I believe most cord cutters don't want to remove the content they watch. Rather they want to eliminate paying for content they have no interest in.

If you reasoning is because of the lack of quality content, then you are fortunate as you don't have to consider how you will consume certain content. The one thing for me that I would not want to lose is the NFL and MLS. I enjoy both of them.

We cut cable because we didn't feel that the humongous bill was worth the small amount of quality content we received. Reality TV on every channel.

 

We cut cable last January, since we retired early and a certain bunch of political hacks decided to make certain things mandatory so we stopped paying for cable tv and internet phone service and went OTA/Internet, Amazon prime and Netflix for subscriptions and Mediatomb for the CD/DVD collection. Even helped save electricity as well, new tv, new computer, and no electricity sucking cable box. Phone is now via a cell transceiver that the entire house system plugs into.

If games keep getting played we have several other optional items that can be dispensed with.

We get 12 OTA channels with a simple indoor antenna which is far more nothing than one would like to watch.

Amazon has since added music and radio to the Prime list of services.

I have far more than I could possibly watch or listen to.

 

Shortly after getting rid of cable we bought an internet radio. It's actually a decent unit that has two speakers so it sounds good. It sits on the counter in our kitchen is awlays on. It's ultra cool as we can listen to news and music from all over the world. During Christmas we had the Bavarian radio station on.
