I am looking for someone that wants to get into the firewood business or already is and is close to 12302 zip code. If you live close by you already know that Schenectady N.Y. got one of the Casino's New York state is allowing. The entrance is 1.5 miles from my property in the last 2 days I have had 3 offers to buy me out 2 plus acres. I am considering it. Have a customer list selling about 33 cord a year and just got a new customer that wants 5 cord. At this stage I am just trying to figure out what my options are. The potential I see is over 80 cord if somebody did some advertising. I don't advertise and sell only by word of mouth. I have a deal with a guy that lives on rt. 147 on the way to Sacandoga lake for next year to sell campfire wood (Pine) and if someone wanted to take the time to bundle some wood they could sell it at a much higher price outside of the local camp grounds (McConchies) off rt. 67.

You may want to hang on a while, the offers are only going to get bigger. We should all be so lucky to have your problems! Best of luck in both endeavors! :dex:

Ralphieboy, I have been doing this (running my restaurant) too long. I love doing firewood and am only going to split about 2 1/2 cord a year for myself in the next house I buy. I don't want to be rich, I want contentment. When you come up to visit I will tell you a few stories about two millionaire friends of mine. I wouldn't trade their lives for mine ever. They don't know or understand the enjoyment of being outside cutting and splitting firewood, all I ever get from them is "You really need the money that bad ?" Nothing against any Lawyer's or Account's on this site but there is nothing worse to me then spending two hours with you guys and I am including the Dentist.

    Chopy,
I work for that new casino's competition and have seen some development and properties sold around this resort. I don't know the lay of the land down there or what could end up being developed around it if the area takes off. In the 7 years I've been here the only property sales or developments ( hotels, stores and such) that appear to benefit from the casino are within 1/4 mile of the resort.

Are you selling 2 acres of land that you process firewood on or 2 acres with a restaurant?

2 acres with a restaurant and processing firewood on the back acre. You being in the casino business also know that it won't take long before they lose much of their Luster as is the case with Saratoga Racino (30 minutes north) that is already complaining about the competition. Look at Atlantic city and Turning Stone in Utica neither doing what they did 10 years ago. The lay of the land is 890 off of the NYS Thruway to the casino or from north having to go by my place off of Rt. 50 one of two bridges that crosses the river into Schenectady the other about 5 miles upstream. One of the people that approached me wants to run the restaurant and put a 30 unit motel up out back for the people who don't get Comps. Can't put up a hotel as the back of my property is only about 1,200 ft. or so from Schenectady County airport and the 109th Airlift Wing's base and runways for the C-130's and there is a height restriction on the height of buildings in the runway paths. Mostly residential area other than my road about a mile long and about 2 miles up the road being commercial as well. The river blocks off any other commercial business as it is either Freemans Bridge or the Western Gateway bridge. I would love to pick your brain as to the knowledge you have, there is nothing like being there and knowing what has happened, it is all new to me.

Bret, I need to know why my wife who plays penny slots gets more comps than I do and I spend hours playing Let it ride, roulette or that suckers game Caribbean stud.
Even though I seem to do well at it.

GE is now down to under 5,00 employees in Schenectady from 46,000 back in the late 80's on a good note their Windmill division has been hiring. I can remember back in the 80's doing a $1,000 lunch with much of it coming from GE. I am about 3.5 miles from the GE plant across the Mohawk River in the town of Glenville.

Shoot me a PM when you can and I'll let you know what I've seen and heard. I'm no expert by any means but I've paid attention to what seems to be working, and not working.

I can't help you with the gambling question. I work in the golf and grounds department and I'm not allowed to do much gambling. Just the slots and I've never really cared for them.

I'm so glad you guys got the casino and we didn't. I'm about 4 miles from Howes Caves and I didn't want all of the traffic. I'd rather have the farms. Good luck!

I am happy only because it is forcing me to retire something I have been putting off for a few years now. I might open a small place with my grandson but not work it half as much. As for your area I had a friend who worked the kitchen at Howes Cavern and lived in Sprakers, he has since passed, you live in God's country. You are a smart man knowing what you have.
