Had an informal talk today with a few neighbors...............as I was getting my mail, and they were hauling their garbage receptacles back.

Topics covered most everything neighbors talk about when they aren't real "tight" with each other.................weather, politics, utility costs etc. That's what got them against me; the utility cost, after I told them my gas bill was just over $20 last month and my electric bill right around $35!!!

How do you do it??? Your house must be like an icebox. No way are your bills that low. Etc. etc. etc.

So I invited them all in to almost 75*F warmth and then showed them my gas and electric bills!!!!

They left on good terms, but the jealously/envy was evident.

Let 'em eat cake! Good for you inviting them in. That sounds like a seed planted. Some grow and some don't.

Like we used to say when planting corn:

    Some for the seed
    Some for the crow
    Some for the worm
    And some to grow.

My neighbor scum have always hated me.
    Got ya beat !
Really they do, and I like it that way. 2 of them I have had to threaten lawsuits on so they would mind their own business.
Good on you for the low bills and chattin up the hood. I turn my head when I see one of my neighbors drive by. Its just so much more peaceful that way.

Got 1 idiot neighbor like that. She'd rather listen to the 3 beagles next door to me bark all day at everything and at nothing...................than see my 3 Labs sleeping contently in the "run" I've built for them!!!! My Labs are, on average, in the run 6-8 hours...................WHEN I PUT THEM IN THERE!!!!!! They have water and shelter and they've usually been fed!!!

    Can't fix stupid........................so I don't try.

There will always be neighbors that hate and some that envy. They shouldn't hate. Maybe you opened their eyes to something they had no clue about...make sure you outside tomorrow at 5am and start your chainsaw lmaooooooo

The lady across the street slightly North of my house once said to me as I was unloading a scrounge......................"Don't you have enough wood already??"

My reply was this verbatim................."That's kind of a personal question, don't you think?"

She didn't get it until she'd walked about 10 steps back toward her yard; and then said, "That's disgusting!!"

I'm the "oddball" in a neighborhood of conformists!!!

I had a neighbor that was a real piece of work for about 20 years. We could pass close by mowing and he would rarely say a word, when I put my pool in on that side of the house next to his property about 10 years ago I went over and talked with him about the possibility of getting in his yard a bit with the machinery but I would repair anything that was done to the grass he was ok.....until we started and he made some remarks to another neighbor that was helping me about knowing where the property line was. After that he went out of his way it seemed to not speak. Over the last few years they have begun being snow birds and travel south for the winter, when they were a little late coming back I decided to mow the grass a few times and also over the past 3 years have added/grown his firewood stack. (campfire burners and occasional fireplace). You wouldn't know he was the same person, guess the old saying sometimes is true "killem with kindness". He came over this year with a thank you card and gift certificate.

I think most of my neighbors get it. A lot of them burn wood and I'm noticing most have stashes on par or larger than mine. Most are older and the majority don't have computers so I've never invited any here. Got one that I can't figure out how I feel about so it's always kinda awkward conversation. He seems like the type that would think since I have plenty of wood he should get some of it.

:Yar:2 years ago this Feb. the wife and I moved out of the city where we had lived for 15 years, it was our first house. The neighborhood started declining after about 5 years, and we had grumpy, crappy, noisy, dirty neighbors that eventually forced our hand. We would have moved sooner, but my job had residency requirements at the time (communists!) and then my wife went to college full time.

    Move ahead

We moved to the country in the city (few citys north). Our 2 acres is bordered by a 6 acre property occupied by a couple that just hit their 90's this month, and have lived there since the 50's, it was their first home! There is about a 100' open yard between our houses and I'm told (never looked for the property markers, you'll see why soon) my property ends approx five feet beyond my driveway into this open yard. I mow 20' into it, he mows all the way to my driveway.

Our properties, to the rear beyond the woods, border the towns recreation center, and the 4th of July fireworks are set up about 20' beyond my property line. Naturally, we host an annual party that day, 2 years ago we rough counted 75 people, last year was a tad bit less, and we fit those cars in the front yard, and along the driveway in the yard on the 5' of property line. We are kid friendly, and they also have a pond, naturally, the kids are attracted, and so are the adults, so there are many walks around the pond.

This neighbor, Ed and his wife Dorothy, whom has Parkinson's:(, have been good neighbors thus far. Ed had told me the day we met to feel free to fish in his pond, I was elated by this and treat it as it were my own, even restocking it this spring (freeze fish kill last winter). I fix his tractor and other odds and ends, plow his driveway, etc. he comes out and bribes my small dogs with treats and we sit on the back porch and chat.

This past 4th of July, we've got a good crowd going by 7:30 - 8:00, lots of kids, 5 y/o to teens, and then my phone rings, it's Ed next door. I don't know why, but anxiety took over, I thought to myself, oh boy, here we go. What was it going to be, too noisy, cars in the yard, kids around the pond, kids in the side yard? I know, I know, the pessimist, thinking the worst, by why else does a neighbor call during a get together?

"Keith, this is Ed next door."

"Hi Ed, how are you? What's goin on?"

"Keith, tell you friends to park further in the yard, and tell those kids to get out of your way and play out in the side yard."

In shock, I say, "Thanks Ed! Feel free to come over and eat, or I can even bring you guys a plate."

This neighbor just went from good neighbor to great neighbor! Totally blindsided me:eek:. I have lived among arseholes for so long , I didn't know how to act!

Thanks for letting me share that story, I love to tell it. It is a lovely experience to have good neighbors, and I am truly grateful. Ed will never pay for labor on his petrol powered machinery again.

I will say this, if you are not happy where you are living, move now! It has been a life changing move, and we're only 10 miles away from where we were, and payed about 20% more than we paid for our old house 15 years ago. Thanks for reading, and keep cuttin'

That's a nice story to hear. Seems that the more rural you are, the less people have their undies twisted up. I only have a couple acres, but I am very isolated. You have a good neighbor and it is good that you keep relation on good terms.

My neighbor - the only one close to me thinks it's awesome. He used to burn wood but switched to a pellet stove years ago because of time constraints. He gives me all of his old tarps and keeps an eye out for wood scores.

On a side note, I started burning wood for fun more than anything till I got my first cold weather electric bill. It was half of what we get in the summer and we have all electric baseboard heating. Wood heat is gooder...

Having good neighbors is great, and having bad ones can be terrible. I've been lucky to have good neighbors on both sides all my life. Until recently at least, neighbor on the right passed away. New neighbors aren't so great

Great story......now that my neighbor to the west has made a 180ยบ turn I have all good neighbors. He is the only one that is close as I have all pasture behind and the neighbor to the east is like 1000 yards away.

Bad neighbors keep chit real and keep me sharp. It took me 10 years to figure out how to handle the dewshnozzles and lifes been great since. I don't waste seconds letting someone know theyre an azzhat if it be the case. Efficient, clean, and quick .
