    Maybe that heartwood color is caused by a disease? I saw a few dead maple limbs around here with spotting in the heartwood similar to that. But maybe it's just me?

    I believe it's a fungus that does that, but it's just a normal part of the decay process. It's known as "spalting". Most maple will end up looking like that if you let the log sit on the ground for a while.
