So I posted the make/model of the 9mm in the wrong thread last night, the pic here way above. It's a 9mm super power is what he said. Then he pulled out the revolver to drill/verse me on it again, and answered some of the questions you posed to me. Its a 44 Ruger super blackhawk. He said he decided to leave that one for me because "if" there were an intruder in the house he didnt want me to panic over the case, safety, pulling it back to load chamber, and that a 9mm might not actually stop an intruder. So the revolver answers, the first 2 chambers are empty, but the 4 others are loaded. Again this is a cautious man that knows me too well. He said the first chamber is empty in the case I actually NEED it of course I would be scared and shaking and might drop it. The second chamber is empty for similar reasons. And in his mind an intruder that hears the hammer pull back will take me more seriously. Then if I ever did pull the trigger, the revolver would stop him better than the goose gun or 9mm. I hope this makes sense :)

44mag isn't a load for the inexperienced. From the sounds of it, you haven't shot it, correct? I would practice with that revolver before you need it.

And as far as an intruder being scared off by sound... the sound of a pump action shotgun breaks all language barriers. It's the universally understood way of saying GTFO or else!

    Did I miss another thread?

I have shot it but its been many years since last lesson. No doubt it would knock me on can now. So you would rather leave a goose gun?...He still has pump action ones...

    I'll play.
At what range and with what load?
Hoist that cannon from the hip and aim in general direction of perp. Home defense becomes- Home defended, quickly.

I'm a shotgun guy for defense inside the home. The spread means you have a much better chance of hitting the bad guy while being under duress. If you've shot a barret, I'm sure you have had some practice with the 44 also. Ultimately it comes down to what you are most proficient with. A shotgun blast with number 4 shot from inside of 7 yards (average distance in a self defense situation) is going to stop whatever threat is in front of you while throwing out a pattern the size of a softball rather than a bullet that's half an inch.

My .338 likes a 250gr. over 500 meters. Let us know how the lighter ones work out. VLD's ? Berger makes a good bullet.
Guess you just have to get a bit more familiar with the handguns, huh.

Wife let me hijack this one, 185 gr Barnes Blue Coated bullet, amazing round, no they do not foul barrels, bullet was discontinued but I have a lot. Coating allows lower pressures and amazing accuracy and increased velocity. I always say I have not had anything walk away from that load. Basically a 338 on steriods

I guess we mostly like the 300 gr 44 mag for self defense, just no question about the knock down damage. I do agree that a shotgun is brutal in close quarters.

Lol. Understandable. Post up those groups! I've never shot at those ranges. No public range in indiana offers that distance. :(

Is the ruger black hawk Single action only? If not you should practice in dual action. Then the dropping out thing won't matter cause you will never have a cocked hammer. Plus in a high stress situation there may not be time or you could forget to cock the met back.

In SC , CWP class they won't let you shoot single action. They want you to get use to just pulling the trigger.

Yes, practice practice practice with that Ruger!! My nightstand gun is a Glock .40 S&W and my wife has shot it twice and refuses to shoot it again, she thinks it kicks too much. So I won't let her near my .44 mag Colt Anaconda! I've got her set up with a 9 shot .22lr revolver in her nightstand. It's not my first choice for a defense gun, but at least my wife is comfortable with it and shoots it accurately. I forced her to shoot it double-action last time we practiced just so she would know how much harder the trigger pull is and how much it changes accuracy. In single action at 7 yards she normally is 8/9 in knocking over beer cans. Double action dropped that to 1 out of 9.
