Was just given the look as Mrs loon was doing her Sunday cleaning

When i clean out the ashes in the stove i have the bucket right below the door and use the small stove shovel to fill it up slowly, but i do see alot of dust flying up and away.

Anybody do anything different to keep the dust down?

    Thanks eh

I find unless I do it when the stove it cold, no hot ashes, that dust will fly up.

I know BWS will say easy, easy, and there wont be any dust, but as slow as I go, it just happens. I think he will have to do a tutorial on that too. I tend to dust up the place too, and everything gets a coating on it:mad:

Yep, I go very slow and still see a slight wisp coming out of the bucket.
    I mean....really slow. Just like me.
I keep an air purifier running all the time and it seems to clear up the air pretty well, but we still get lots of dust in the house.
Personally, I think it comes from us and the dogs bringing in crap from outside. They carry lots of dirt and sand on their paws, and we do the same on our shoes (because I know someone will mention us and paws in some way...I would:D).
Sweep and vacuum up daily. I'm surprised we still have a yard, we've thrown out so much.

After I lower the shovel into the can as I slowly empty the shovel, I have the shop vac running and hold the hose over the top edge of the can. Virtually ALL the ash dust ends up in the vac. I never get the vac nozzle near the shovel as I don't want to suck up a hot coal by accident. Works really well

    Take a cheap box fan
Get an air filter that just covers the fan
Bungee the filter over the suction side
Set it above the stove door blowing away, on low speed
    Not 100%
    But Helps a lot.

I did that as a poor man's air filter in the shop.
Haven't tried it yet, but I have the fan/filter.

    Yea
Keeps the dust down quit a bit out there.

I put a filter on the one I use to move air in the house around too.
Every little bit helps control dust.

Good stuff gang :) The best way i have found that doesnt leave any dust is use a big square head shovel i have and do one scoop. But its about 30ft out to the steel bin 'through' the house and is very nerve racking
Which i've done only a few times.

I use a galvanized garbage pail for the ashes. The pail has a cover that seals quite tight. When I empty the ashes I bring the pail very close to the stove door. I always open the air bypass and the draft of the stove as much as possible. That way there is a natural draft up the chimney for fly ash disturbed as I shovel inside the stove. then as I pull out the shovel I just open the cover of the pail a crack to let the shovel in, and gently dump the ash. Pull the shovel head out and slide the cover closed. It catches most of the ash in the pail, very little escapes into the air and what does is usually pulled back into the stove from the natural draft.

Works pretty well. The shop van thing is a possibility for me, that I may try next cold ask clean-up. all in all my technique works for me and even better since I got the Fireview.

I cover half the bucket opening with tin foil the open half is in the stove helps allot but not 100%
    The ash vac also helps
I dreamed of a hollow mantle connected to a central type vac or blower that would double to move heat around.

I always have dust however it isn't bad at all if you go slow and put the bucket slightly in the door. When it's done that way most the dust goes right up the chimney.

I use a flat shovel and then I tilt the bucket about 45 degrees when putting the a hovel with ashes into the bucket. When getting the ashes off the shovel I uae a motion that is more like sliding them off the shovel rather than dumping them off the end. When doing that I have little to no dust.

I have a shovel like that out in the shed with no handle, one or two big scoops into the bucket, might be better than a bunch little ones

I use a shop vac, running with the tip just on the side of the bucket (so there is NO fear of sucking an ember) it sucks 100% of the ash out. As noted above, when ashes are cold, there will be very little to zero dust. But when the stove is hot/warm, no matter how slow you go, there is always some that rises up (the heat is what causes it to rise).

A small cheap Shop vac with a HEPA filter and a Fine filtration bag (drywall bag) will eliminate any dust that would come out the exhaust of the vac.

Kinda just lay it on the top, I can take a pic tomorrow. I redt the tip on the can off the side, using the handle to hwlp hold it..

No fire going tonight in the wood eater. With wind like this, it can take off and go nuclear real quick. So I will be cleaning tomorrow.
