I split 2 cords yesterday afternoon with my DHT 22 ton. Between myself and the 3 other family members (we purchased it together) it's probably split 9 cords this year with zero issues. The placement of the handle vs the wheel isn't ideal, but you forget about it after using it for a few minutes.

Spent a little more time with the new splitter today. Another nice day in the northeast. One thing I can't figure out, however, is why they welded the spindles for the wheels to the rear of the oil tank instead of the front. It would have moved the wheels 4 inches forward, giving you a bit more room to move.

    Nice pile of splits.
    Having fun , eh?

Maybe it's made more for "Vertical" splitting.
Not in your way then ?

    Give it a try. :)

Can you unbolt the tank/tongue/beam and flip things around so the wheels are closer to the front?

No because it would hit the base.

Dave, I tried but my back said no. I find it really uncomfortable to work down low like that. I used the vertical mode to pop the larger rounds in half and then back to horizontal.

Mike, I thought about that but it would put the engine on the wrong side as the engine mount is also welded to the tank. I think one day when I'm feeling bored I'll drain the hydraulic fluid, cut the axles off, and weld them to the front.

Yep, me too! 22 ton is plenty of power for splitting wood. Heck, my 5 ton electric never had any issues except for the worst big crotchy pieces. Enjoy! oh, and definitely put a table on it. I love having the table, couldn't imagine using it without it.

    Safety.

Moving the wheels forward will put more of the weight of the log behind the axle and increase the likelihood of the splitter flipping backwards with a heavy round on it and the ram extended.
