The 261 will pull the 3/8 better, but the 550 is a more nimble saw. The non-M 261 is a fine saw.......but the M/T version is just fantastic in that it is always perfectly tuned.
A user perspective here. I love my saws and would love to get them ported HOWEVER... For the cost I can sell a saw and invest the difference in a bigger saw. I do A LOT of tree work in my village so this is my perspective. That said if I have it poportedts going to Randy providing he has time. One day I will for chits and giggles.....
I don't have $300 into any of my saws. All but 2 I have less than $125 into... But I'd bet most of them are 40% faster then an awesome ms362.
Guess I'm one of the 50% that doesn't see the point in spending a grand or more to buy and send an overweight 60cc saw out for work. So that it runs almost as well as a $100-$200 044. That's not to take away from what Randy does. I just would rather save my money.
I do understand that.... So far the only saw I have bought that was too heavy for the power was the 290. It was sold after two uses lol.
No one tells you how to spend yours..? I dont see the point in a lot of things? But to each their own? No ? Free world? The day I can tell you how to spend your money? Is a day I become a rich man. Till then, I will buy $1,000 saws. Put $400 into them, and sell them for a loss. Someone has to. Why not be me. GFY..
I can see where mike is coming from. I have a ton of saws, but only two have cost me any significant amount of money.the 550xp and t540xp. All the rest were rebuilt logger saws. They aren't pretty, but they work. That's also why I port my own junk. I couldn't afford to have them all ported when i don't use them all everyday.
I'm taking a break for painting for a few minutes, so I'll try to throw a little more perspective into this whole ported saw thing. I traded for a very nice, low hour 372XP last year sometime. When it arrived, I asked Jon (my son in law) if he would take it to the log pile and see how it ran. I heard him down there making a few cuts.....then tuning it. Making a few more.......tuning........etc. I walk down the the pile......and he shuts off the saw. He said "that saw is messed up". I say.......well it sounded pretty good. He says, yeah......but it ain't got no power. It's low on compression or something. I make a few cuts with it then...... It seems ok to me. Jon goes back to the shop and grabs his ported 372 and makes a few cuts with it. Then he says again........"yeah Randy, that saw is messed up". It took me some doing to convince him that the "new" 372 was ok.......not messed up. The "problem" with the new 372 was that it was stock...... We run ported saws nearly every day........so a stock saw feels "messed up".
I see 70cc saws regularly for under $200... At the right time of the year. Your not going to see them in October when everyone is looking to cut some firewood. But in January when it's 20 below there is almost daily deals to be had.
