The ones at dad's I just took down had a 2-3" stem at the bottom. I cut a 2' section of of them two summers ago and it was still attached quite well to the tree. If you just cut it, it will grow back together. Sub freezing temps are another way to deal with it as the juices won't flow as easily.

I'd like to tell ya the bore and back cut method would work like you want it to, but I don't think it will. I think it will rip the root out. I don't envy you in this situation at all

I dont think I could pull it off with my truck, IIRC, she starts wrapping around the trunk as it goes up. I will try to grab a few more pics later today, but I remember thinking to myself that I wouldnt be able to pull it down and was not liking having to cut it no matter what I could come up with.

I really appreciate everyones ideas and suggestions, I am keeping an open mind about this mutha ................ one thing I cant do is leave it alone. This tree MUST come down. Sp please, if anything else pops into yer minds, feel free to unload here ..................... one thing is for sure, I am going to have a real sharp chain to cut with

Section the vine (with the handsaw!) to clear the way for your felling cuts. Once it's on the ground, you can cut the vine into manageable pieces and pull them off, with the truck if need be. Biggest one I've done was 4-5" diameter and it wasn't fun. Wound up with a bit of rash on my wrists but wasn't awful.

You can use the top of the bar so it shoots the chips away from you too. A bit awkward but effective.

I have a friend that eats a new leaf of poison ivy every spring. He claims it's made him immune.

It does sound nuts.......but I did some reading on the idea. It seems to be an old one. The young red leaves in the spring.......inside a ball of bread....

    Poison usually doesn't bother me.....

but a couple months ago I dropped a huge forked Red Oak that had poison growing up both forks all the way to the top. I had that chit from head to toe and some not so pleasant places . lol

Cut the vine at the bottom and let it die awhile. The Oil in it is what gives some people the reaction.

ive had it really bad because of cutting it with a saw. mid summer sweat pouring ,pours wide open and slinging the juice all over the arms and face can give you a very very nasty case of poison ivy. ive had in in my eyes twice too.
