Ported saw are not for everyone. Just like drag cars, fast boats, and stunt planes aren't. The older saws do not respond to the mods I do quite as well...they aren't plugged up by the EPA as much. The M-T Stihls, and A- T Husqvarnas are the saws I do the most of.

A 40% gain in cut speed is probably not being realistic. That became a "buzzword" when we were all giving Brad a hard time a few years ago. 30 - 35% is pretty common though.

I've tried really hard to find a balance between durability, and performance. I've kept very good notes, and would like to think the saws I'm building are better now than ever. I've ported well over 700 saws since I've been doing this, and have had only a handful of failures. The ones that I know about are always fixed on my dime too.

At any rate......I see some guys saying things that make it seem like having a saw ported is not worth the expense. Those guys are 50% right. Half the people that run a ported saw probably ain't gonna be excited by it. Those guys need to keep their money and run their stock saws. The other half are gonna be tickled chitless, and have more saws done.

I do a bunch of saws for people that use them to make money with.......those guys will rarely post about their saws......to them they are just another tool. Those guys send saws three at a time normally. They tell me that their guys don't want to run a stock saw after using a ported saw......

I have more repeat users than I have single customers, and I'm booked up till mid August. That says more for my work than I ever can.

    Peace.

You are 100 % in saying that having repeat customers says a lot for your work. I've only heard good things about your work so you must be doing something right.

For years I have been cutting firewood to heat only my home. My stock Husqvarna, and now my stock Stihl have been very capable of handling the job. However, I have started to sell some firewood to help pay the taxes on our recently purchased acreage. And next fall I would like to sell twice what I sold this year. Even cutting just my
own firewood I could see the advantage some more power in a saw could have. It still is not a lot of cutting though. And I don't know that the expense of having some work done to the saw would be justified. I have thought about it though. A good sharp chain makes a BIG difference. :saw:

Hi Randy. I really like my Masterminded 346xp an stuff!!!

Stock saws work fine for me, but I enjoy a ported saw more. :smoke:

Most of the saws I have run when I go to GTGs have been ported. If you have stocks saws with you very few people want to run them unless they are rarely seen models like a twin cylinder saw. If it wasn't for going to GTGs, I probably would have never had a chance to run ported saws.

If you are looking for cost effectiveness, it is hard to beat a muffler mod and dropping and checking the squish. I've been pleased.

Don't get me wrong, I have some nice ported GTG cookie cutters but that's where they get used - not in the woods.

One of the most impressive saws I've ever used was a nearby 10 mm 044 with a aftermarket Magnum muffler cover and the dog house cut out of the main muffler body. The saw wasn't ported nor even have the squish dropped. It probably wouldn't have timed out so impressive in cookie cutting but it was just the overall balance, sound, and throttle response that made the grade. I've been around other non ported 044's - oh hum . . . :tears:

The same guy had a 046 on a 460 tank and a 394 but they didn't excite me like that particular 044.

Stumble upon impressions sometimes last for years.

The 576at that Randy ported for Termite on AS was a very strong runner.

The 576xp AT that I've got is very good at throwing some wood chips too...it totally shocked me how well it ran. I'll try to get some videos out in a week or so during Christmas break...

MM.........are you just "improving" the flow of "air in and air out" via your mods???

Does this increase the "designed" max RPM of the saw???

Randy has it right and I've not heard a single bad word about him or his work. It's true - if you need a high end work saw, do it - if you want a ported saw for fun, do it. If you like your stock saw, run it. Nuff said. Cheers!
