Poison Ivy/oak/sumac is an oil that gets on your skin. If it gets absorbed then you get the dreaded rash and itch. Get rid of the oil and the rash will go away much quicker. Clorox bleach, gasoline, and other harsh chemicals are probably doing more harm than good. Especially if the rash is oozing or the skin is otherwise broken. Technu and other remedies (try Zanfel) work but can get expensive for more than a very mild case.

Best way to get rid of the oil is to wash thoroughly with cool water and mechanics hand cleaner. barrier creams like Ivy Block work wonders too.

Once the rash has set in, you really can only use the various anti-itch remedies and wait it out.

Possibly. I've only ever done that on hands and arms, I probably wouldn't put it on my face

Poison ivy really sucks, I have had poison ivy everywhere on my body I mean everywhere.
Had it really bad when I was younger and ended up having to go to the doctor with it
I have been doing good the last couple of years and didn't get it at all this past summer.
If I do get it I scrub with Zanfel and use Ivarest Anti-Itch Cream, this is the best cream will stop the itch for a long long time.

On your face...Head to urgent care and get a shot of steroids, clears it right up and your eyes won't swell shut.

    Good Luck!

image.jpg That looks nasty. Hard to keep yourself from scratching it. I am hyper vigilant where I step or what I touch after having a few run in with poison ivy, spiders, ground bees, and snakes.

You don't get it ONLY from your bare skin touching it. You can get the oil (which is what gives you PI) on your cloths, gloves, tools, anything! And then touch that object, and whallah!

Actually, there is one thing that works well, BUT it is not good for you, so don't do it often.

Bingo! That's the best thing to do after washing with PI soap, and putting anti-itch cream on it. But be careful, the steroid used for this purpose is not very good for the body. It's not like HGH steroid (aka the steroids ALL the athletes take). I used to work in landscaping years ago, and pulled PI out with bare hands in short sleeves and shorts. Suffice it to say I spent many a visits at the Doc office trying to get rid of it, from ALL over my body. The doc stopped giving me the shots after a while saying it was too damaging....

Showering with dish soap can't help because it will get rid of the oils but it can dry your skin out

Oh I know that the oil gets on everything it touches. I'm always careful taking off whatever I was wearing and make sure I toss it right in the wash. It just seems no matter how careful I am, I manage to get it somewhere each time. I try to stay away from the doc as much as possible and would rather not put any steroids in my body so i'm just waiting out the itch.......
