Yeah I don't get that either, seeing as Maine is the most "forrested" state in the country, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest_cover_by_state_in_the_United_States and very high in the percentage of that land that is privately owned, http://www.summitpost.org/public-and-private-land-percentages-by-us-states/186111 I guess it is because of the timber industry infrastructure is able to handle mass quantities of timber and to do other more profitable things with that timber. The last time I tried to get a truck load of tree length, the guy told me "for the price I get at the mill, I'd rather truck it to the mill", the closest mill is at least 2 hours.
Wood does cost a lot here. But then there are a lot of restrictions. I.e. In Augusta, there is an ordinance against cutting up any more wood in your yard then what you will use. Usually they think of this as 10 cords or less. Noise! Cost of living is very high. Voted the least bussiness friendly state. I don't know anyone who cuts wood and sells it who is living high. They have a lot of overhead and a huge physical risk. I burn pellets at a cost of just under 200/ton. And burn about 5.5 tons. I used to burn wood, about 5 cords a year. I bought most of my wood. I know darn well it was cut during the prior winter and sold as seasoned wood.

We have a town of Bangor not far from me with similar jokes. Bangor? I hardly know her. Bangor? Every chance I get.
Yup in the old Slate Belt,if I'm not mistaken.Early Welsh immigrant stone cutters named it for their hometown.I have some antique slate & stone working tools from a dealer that lives in Nesquehoning,beautiful scenery in that region,cant wait to go back.Really loved Bushkill Falls Park,hiked the entire expert trail in an afternoon.Stunning photos from several bluffs.
You know, in all my years, I never thought of that. We pronounce Bangor in such a way that it doesn't enable that twist. It is funny when you think about how it sounds to "those from away".
