So, I fired up The Google to check the veracity of whether it's illegal, in Oklahoma, to sell firewood in terms of "ricks," since even local tree companies (with certified arborists) are doing such on their websites. While perusing the results, I clicked on this one from Oklahoma Forestry Services. The "appalling" part can be found under the "When to Buy" section, but I also found the "What About Cutting Your Own" portion to be amusing. http://www.forestry.ok.gov/Websites/forestry/Images/Firewood Tips for Homeowners.pdf
Yes, appalling. Incompetent. Even, dare I say, dangerous? It would probably be a very good idea for you to shoot them a letter explaining your concerns with their statements.
We are in the top 95% of woodburners...either dont know better, or dont care to know better...i get it all the time..."pine will burn your house down", "dry wood burn to fast", "green wood burns longer".."that wood is gonna rot before you use it all"..blah, blah, blah...
Yep, except for the "when to buy" section, not bad. "A cord is the amount of wood tightly stacked in 128 cubic feet of space measuring 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet. A half-cord would be a stack 4 feet by 8 feet with sticks 24 inches long. A 4 by 8 foot stack with sticks only 16 inches long is only one-third of a cord." Bingo, although there are other ways to measure out the same cu. ft.
The cut your own advice isn't that bad taken in the context of my neighbor who wanted to clean up a few branches. Buy a saw, put on a pair of shorts and nothing else, straight gas the saw and then be left wondering why it didn't run for very long.
You cant fix stupid. Unfortunately too many people in positions of authority fit that description & almost nothing you say/do to them will change their arrogance. They wouldn't recognize facts that are right in front of them.
My brother must have read that. He was questioning why I'm setting the oak I cut a month ago aside for 3 more years. He assured me it'd be ready to burn next fall.
The trouble with these sites and the information is that this information no doubt was printed 100 years ago and it just gets passed on from year to year with no change. Then some idiot maybe wants to run a newspaper article or a magazine article and they just look it up and print what they find. After all, it comes from a reputable source, doesn't it? Yes, it has the name behind the info but the info is not worth a hoot but how do you get them to change?
Community colleges could have quarterly "Heating with wood" classes. Dennis could write the course criteria & handouts ********Professor Dennis********
Education and intelligence have nothing to do with each other. And yes, you can have one without the other.
+1 Also possible the author has neither. LOL The list going around online, examples of "your gov't is run by idiots if: " may apply here.
