Hello my name is Don and I am a new member, I collect wood types. tree companys wood call and I wood clean up after a tree was felled and I wood collect the best of the clean up, and one day I was cleaning up some branch from about 2 inch to 5 inch thickness and I cut them in 18 inch leinths and did not give much thought of what I had my hands on, the clean up was in a small yard by the St Paul, mpls airport in Minnesota, weeks later I sat down and started burning this brown wood and it started crakeling and poping like lady finger firecrackers it was loud and intence and lasted for the entire burn, and it was not the bark burning like that, which was thin and brown the same color as the wood, now this could have been an old vine or like a bush like lilac in nature, I work as an Equipment Manager for the Golf Course industry and have asked a lot of people in tree service and hortaculture and no one has heard of this. the wood had white speckels in it, it was very unique and I would love to get some more of it.

My guess without seeing a picture would be Osage Orange or Hedge.

I am sorry that I burnt all the wood in a hurry, my wife and I started a neighborhood crime watch, and the meth and drug people started calling the city on me in retaleation, the city said that my wood was a hazzard that it could bring mice and other problems to the aera and I had to get rid of it all EVEN THOUGH it was in the middle of my acre with a 3 foot by 3 foot fire pit, it was coolest assortment of split and stacked woods- apples-birchs-mullberry-oaks-pines-cedars-mapels-ash-black walnet-elm-and some (brown wood) which I collected and cut into board and still have that. It was either I burn it all in 1 month or fines would start to come and the bad people who one was an arsenest, was burning my neighbors garages and cars and he burned two of my boats and tried to burn my wood but was to stupid to burn wood, some people just cannot master starting a wood fire. throwing gas on a stack of wood and running away does not always start a good fire, and my skin crawls watching some people trying to start a fire. by the way that ------ person has died from whatever he was on good riddance.

Judging my your description (with no pics) I'm guessing it could be hedge, possibly even dried up mulberry.....very hard to say without seeing it.

I had a half cord of lilac several years back, some big trees at a removal we did a couple years ago, it was very good firewood, lasted a long time in the stove as it was very dense, but I don't recall it crackling and popping a lot....

By the way, welcome to FHC!

The mulberry I had was extremely golden and yellowish and was very boring but wonderful to burn. And by the way, do we have spell check anywhere?

    Welcome to the forum Don.

    Another possibility might be sassafras.

Welcome to FHC Don. Quite the story of what life is like in your neihgborhood.
I get field mice in the fall but I'm not so sure I can say it has anything to do with my wood
stacks. I'm sure with the outside pressure and the city taking calls from "the bed guys" your
    are becoming outnumbered and outgunned.

Great! now I will travel all over the country just to get wood-sassafras-Osage Orange or Hedge. And if I find the same dark brown wood or if you people find some believe me you will start yelping about how cool it is while it burns, sparks flying all over the place, I remember I would put some in the fire for my friends when they would come over and we would laugh while it burned, it was funny, you sure want to burn this wood in a controlled area. I know every one WOOD love this stuff, I had thoughts that maybe it grew in a high sulfur area or some weird soil, I do not know where the same yard is that I got it from, Thank you all for your response's even if we do not get it right I am learning about different woods and I Wood love to hear about the great smells of wood I do not have in Minnesota. my smells-Birch-Hickory-splitting oak is a spicy smell I just debarked and split 5 fresh cords of 100 year old oak and the area is thick in smell, The golf course I work at just spent $5000.00 to cut and remove A huge multi limb, dying, lightning struck 100 year old red oak and I took about 5 cords. Crain's and grapplers to get that old boy down.

Also the bad guys are gone, I cleaned the acre and sold it to a developer, they put $250.000 town houses up and the Mayors office made them the #1 on a problem list and MN Head prosecutor Attorney Phillip Caruthers after we showed him and his staff A police report of 125 police response's in 1 year,( he was embarrassed )helped everyone in the neighborhood the bad house ended up that if you called the police on them 3 squads would show up and they were charged on there property tax. It ended up that you kill them by taking there money. I did wreck the neighborhood if you do not like townhouses but those people would call the police when they did bad. The day I sold the acre I bought an island and there is a lot of wood starting to get there, BY BOAT, I do not mean to offend anyone on my second day but The Island was truly A God given event, I think I was going to be killed and I almost killed a few people, so he just stuck me up north. anyone is welcome to come visit we will burn some wood.

Not sure if you have sassafras in MN but if you ever cut any, you'll be looking forward to the next time you can cut more! Very sweet smell.

    .
Mulberry is only yellowish when first cut, after setting in the elements for a short period of time it turns a reddish brown and it does spark a fair amount.

Mulberry and hedge are bright yellow when fresh cut and patina to a mahogany color over time. Sounds like sassafras to me.
