Hey guys and gals Looking for some suggestions to a recent issue of a woodpecker working on corners of my shed. Now this shed has not been touched once in the 15 years it has been there. Last staining was about 10 years ago and just re stained it about 6 weeks ago. Prior to re staining, it had the weathered look and was almost the same color as the bare trees around it. Now we went a bit darker (Cabot Australian Oil-Mahogony Flame)to cover over any uneven remaining color. Suddenly a little bugger is going to town on it. During prep and staining, we would have noticed insect traces in the wood, but no real signs of that. Any suggestions on how to handle this?
First off I would investigate for insects on a much closer scale its possible that the woodpeckers are going after some that you didnt notice. I have woodpeckers in my trees that are right next to the shed and they dont touch the shed also you might consider some types of deterrents http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Woodpeckers I like these suggestions except for the suet feeder I wouldnt want to attract them into the yard anymore than they already are and bird feeders also tend to attract rodents which attract snakes both of which will make the lady of the house upset.
I must have a Woodpecker who road the short bus because in the spring he pecks on the metal roof of the wood shed, it makes a hell of a noise.
We took a good lock and really dont see any signs of insects. Also, the first holes, are larger and deep (mabye 3/4"). The additional holes are only surface. I thought he/they had moved on as there were no additional issues for about 10 days, but I just noticed a few more surface holes. Going to putty them today. I dont agree with attracting more with suet either. There is already plenty of trees for them to use. Luckily, all issues are on the corners which are 1 x 6 trim pieces and easy enough to replace. But I want to get rid of the issue prior to replacing. Maybe the guy in my sig could help out But then I would be worrying about the cats being possible prey too
That might actually match the surroundings if I still lived in Revere or Everett The idea makes sense, I am going to try hanging some wind chimes as it will be very similar and add some noise.
That would be great if I could actually catch the little pecker head in the act. Maybe I could borrow Bear for a weekend- is he a bird dog?
It wouldn't do much good..........He absolutely hate Robins and goes wild whenever they are in the yard. Other birds, he pays no attention to.. Go figure.
Ixnay on the boomering of the little birdie, real bad ju ju if caught, and the boomer device makes loud booms heard for long distances.
OK, fine...we are back to the eagle, Bear or whatever non human might take care of the little pecker head...maybe its bad ju ju for the little birdie to be putting holes in my shed .. Really hoping the wind chimes do the trick.
Motion activated noisemaker, sprinkler, or flashy thingies. We get a number of the little darlings, including multiple pairs of pileateds. Love their laughs.
Yeah, there are plenty around here to, and yes I do like the little buggers. Just cant figure out why they just started on the shed after over 15 years? Is it coincidence that we just re stained it a darker color?
Get a nice fat grub and put it in a rat trap that you have secured to the affected part of your building. It's a snap getting rid of the peckerhead!
Yeah, maybe, however, the blunder buss method can result in a consequence or so that you aren't thinking about. Folks that hunt usually find on the same page listing the various seasons and bag limits the verbiage that says only those species listed with a season may be legally taken. Woody wood pecker is not on that list.
