Do these things go bad after so long? We had to unplug it and plug it back in twice this morning to get online. We got it from our phone company in 2008 so it is not new by any means. Thanks.

Everything goes bad eventually, and all networking equipment needs rebooted now and then. I'm in the market for a new modem as well, not seeing the performance I want with the Mediacom standard issue.

We purchased ours from best buy. Has worked well. Might be time for a new one if the reboot doesnt work.

Not to hijack, but a similar question. My router had been less than stellar lately. Anybody got a recommendation for a decent one that won't break the bank. Looks like they go for anywhere between $40 & $200.

Thanks all for the input. I'm gonna call the phone company tomorrow about a new one. Reason being is I think they supply them for free believe it or not. The lines are all a small town co op type company that we are part of.

All fiber ops even clear out here and as a customer we are actually share holders in the company. no money to be made but at the end of the year we usually get a months worth of credit towards the bill.

Butcher , what kind of network are you running over? We had to upgrade here last year as DOCSIS 3.0 rolled out, but my old router worked flawless and it sits in a box downstairs unused.

Holler if you can use it.

The one I had from my cable company was acting up, and the co. starting charging rent even though my contract said no rent, ever. (Company changed hands). So I bought mine and got the rent charge removed. About $6 a month. But like Adam said, make sure you get a compatable modle. Anticipate a cost of $60-70. You have to call the company for. Them. To recognize your new equipment.

What type of internet service do you have DSL or Cable? If you have cable internet, the above surfboard is great. I bought one last month, and I am extremely happy with it.

We've had to replace our modem twice. One other time the phone company tried to tell us it was the modem but after pestering them, they finally found it was their problem as water had gotten in to one of their connections.

I picked up a slightly older Moto Surfboard a year ago for $40. My cable company was charging me $8/month for a much older modem so it made sense. After getting the new one, I haven't had to reset it once, while the older one needed reset at least every 2 months.

I am envious! My only choice is satellite internet and its expensive. Very cool the tel co supplies modems! Also, they may have made improvements since 2008, who knows, your internet may run even better with a new modem.

Well ww we lived fer 30 years in a place that was about like your talkin about. snow 003.jpg
That's our old house back there about 3/4 of a mile offin the road. Just snapped this pic 1 day while getting out to get the mail. We were on what Ma Bell called an anaconda phone system. Old party line type deal that was put in around the time dirt was invented. It was a real treat when we bought our first compuker. Windows 95 purchased at K-Mart for the sum of $650. High speed too I'll tell ya. A whooping 45K bps! I finally got tared of lookin at that old P.C a couple years back since it was sittin out back on some junk I had a need for so I gave it a send off.

The only secure way to get rid of a computer is to destroy the hard drive. Hhere is always a chance your information can be invaded if the hard drive remains intact.

Right where I want to be.
More specificaly, the platters need to be obliterated.
Dust to dust, if you're that concerned about it.
ETA: It'd be interesting to see one of those slugs go through a drive.:D
