While cutting up a score this spring of just dropped trees I came across these rounds. Pictures are when fresh cut. I've not seen this before was curious. Any ideas? It turned kind of gray by the time I split it in the fall
Stains like that indicate that there is metal somewhere in that log. The stain can travel far up and down the log. You should be able to find it real easy if you split them on the stain. Oak in particular shows the blue stains really well. It is very common in yard trees and along fence lines.
Whatever it is,looks like some long ago buried iron/steel in those rounds with the bluish stains.Be careful.
Interesting, I cut these from a former farm abandoned in the 1920's and left to grow over. any idea why blue in color? It all cut split and stacked now, luckily I guess I didn't hit anything.
don't no why they turn blue. I have run into that a lot and have wrecked many chains over the years. when you split that stuff up, if you look hard enough you will find metal in there.
Yep, that's metal. I've had that happen in a few rounds and found nails or eye bolts in them when I started splitting
Another easy way to find it is put on a new chain and start cutting. If all goes as Murphy plans you'll find it on the second cut.
They's metal in der, they is. Anything from a nail to a Volkswagen. You a lucky boy you didn't get it wit yo chain! Beautiful stack of rounds though!
Y'all got it wrong. Those stains are another side effect just like twisted and curly grain. Its from aliens landing and residual radiation mutated it. I now cover my saw with tinfoil so they can't track where I am cutting.
