I didn't think it would happen, assumed $$ jousting. Sure enough, channel just went off in the midst of of the 5pm news.
Now that sucks. I have Directv. So far all is good. A while back, there was that issue here with Tine Warner.
I went through this years ago on the old 8' analog dish, but we all knew things were going digital anyway. I am quite surprised.
I don't understand why anyone is still using cable or dish for anything but Internet any more. I get all the tv, movies, and news from the net, written or in video format. Last night finished the newest season of Dr Who just before watching the PAC 12 championship. If you are worried about missing sports, I haven't missed any game or match I have wanted to watch. Skiing, rugby, cricket, nfl, mlb, hockey. Cut the cord wildwest , or ditch the dish
That sucks. I have uverse, haven't had anything like that happen yet Do you use hulu or one of those online services? I'm not well versed in online tv and whatnot
A lot of folks don't have a fast enough connection to do that. Sometimes, because it's too expensive, and sometimes because it's not available. We went w/o cable for several years and watched (and still do) pretty much anything via internet. We now have cable because my FIL is living with us and it's just a whole lot easier with him here.
sort of. not everything is in a nice convenient place, but I use Amazon fire TV for most. The new fire tv stick is $25 at best buy, I have amazon prime, so I get all their shows free, and they have netflix, along with a lot of other stuff. If you are looking for local news, that is hit or miss. Some locals broadcast much of their content, others not so much. National news is available everywhere.
We cut the cord too, have Roku's and an Apple TV. I don't recommend ditching cable if you like college sports unless you are pretty tech savvy-- and Ideally if you have an iPad and AppleTV. Not that we use the AppleTV much, but using AirPlay fixes a lot of problems. Yes, you can watch pretty much everything you want online using a computer, but it is typically a PITA. And we subscribe to both Amazon Prime and netflix.
My cable and Internet used to be 150 a month, now I pay 65 for internet only, and 15 a month that for my online movie subscriptions. Saving $60 a month isn't too shabby.
No terrestrial high speed internet here. I'm in the Bermuda triangle of western Michigan. No terrestrial high speed internet nor natural gas lines shall pass through this area. Interestingly enough, I can get both at my shack up north, which is 15 miles from the closest town with a post office. I have the $44.99 package with Dish. Not a whole lot of money. I don't need 500 channels of nothing to watch. As it is, I only watch maybe 5 of the channels in my package.
I use a wireless ISP, but I'm on the fringe of their service area. Browsing/email works OK, but streaming video doesn't work very well. I get around 1 meg down and 256k up on a good day. On a not so good day, it's around 256k down and 70k up. I went from dialup to Hughesnet (which was horrible), to a Verizon hotspot, then put up a tower so I could get the WISP signal. It's the best I can do. Cellular hot spots are what most people use around here, so performance on those is pretty crappy. A speed test on my phone gets around 300k down and 80k up. LTE is a few miles down the road, right where terrestrial internet and natural gas starts. All part of the price I have to pay to have few neighbors.
Ever played with the coffee can/door pin/satellite dish antenna builds? Man, those things were fun to play with back in the day.
No, but built a DB8 style antenna for OTA broadcasts out of aluminum foil and a coat hanger and went from 2 stations I could pick up with rabbit ears to every network including the Canadian one 65 miles away
That would be good. We can only get a few channels in because we are on the corner of mulitple markets. Closest stations about 60 miles from here, in mankato, fort dodge, and mason city.
Mine is installed in my attic, so I didn't need to build it weather proof. Here is a Site with plans, there are many out there. http://moneyrhythm.com/diy/how-to-build-a-db8-antenna/
