like I said, unicorn... its not the norm... Hey, when you beat me, I'll be a wise zzz and say mine didn't cost me a dime... . Maybe i'll dig out the box of jugs I messed up years ago trying finger ports, or boost ports. They aren't new by any means. Dean from washington hot saw built one of the strongest 460's I have ever ran 8-9 years ago. You could literally stand on that thing and it just kept cutting. everyone said it would't last because there so little cylinder left with all the ports added to it. As far as I know, its still alive cutting timber never been torn down. It was built for a faller out west that didn't want to lug a 660 around. I remember signing up over at hearth doing the install on my stove. You had one 036 you had just gotten and and 029. tried to get all of you guys together to run some saws, so you could see what ported saws were all about. that winter I was gone again...missed out on life living out of a suitcase for months on end for work. then a year or two goes by, then another. I Come back and you have 10K in new saw gear.. all my junk is old, wore out logger rebuilds, but they are mine. Anyone that has met me knows I'm a stand up guy and will do anything for anyone. heck I'd give the shirt off my back if ya needed it. I quit hanging around all the saw boards because it was he-man chest pounding drama. Its funny to me now that BS is a big porter. I remember selling him an old red-light 066 when he restored a couple of old stihls and made them look new and had no idea what a muffler mod was. It had a super minor port on it, and he commented on how well it ran after he had it. That saw ran well for opened transfers, 1mm lowered intake, 1/2 mm raised exhaust. Now he is mr big shot. He was outcast by a few when he started doing his own work too, and he stuck with it. I think its cool, I just remember how un-performance oriented he was at the time. Now he's a professional west coast logger. Ive seen the pictures... hard hat, suspenders and all. Everyone likes to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to what is trendy. whether its in the gun world, car world, chainsaw performance, etc. There has been sooooo many saw builders come and go. Their work was the top notch thing to have, at the time. Where are they now? when I quit coming around, the current builders weren't around. Very few are willing to think outside of the box, share what they learn or think, and when they do they get looked down upon or laughed at. The builders didn't like me doing mods, then sharing what I learned and posting timed videos whether it worked or not. I was giving out trade secrets... I was showing the rest of the do-it-yourselfers what I was learning. I ruined lots of jugs and pistons, but I learned a ton. I never raced, I never built cheater stock saws. I played around building my own junk. I had too much pride and too little coin to pay someone to port all my saws. When I started getting gooder gains that chains and saws I bought, thats when the drama started. Every builder had their cliques of cheerleaders. I wasn't a cheerleader or follower. It was hard wading through all the BS to learn what I have. Yeah its old skool, but ya know what, I don't loose any sleep and I still put wood on the ground when I need to...and once ya get to know me, you'll find out I take pride in building my own junk, weather its a scrap wood hauler trailer, front end loader for an ancient foreign tractor, cutting and welding a stock ford intake to run 11's on the stock motor NA back in the 90's when supercharged stroker motors didn't run that, or even a chainsaw. I had the bug bad. I sold most of the chit I had. Now life is more important to me to balance work and life; getting moved into the garage, house repairs, getting firewood, selling stuff to pay bills, having fun, etc. The saw I'm getting from you is for a buddy that has a bunch of trees where I cut. I don't have any tree connections or hookups anymore so burning wood, sourcing it is my dilemma now along with time. He's laid off with 4 kids and in the same boat I am with wood. I gave him a cord of wood because I thought I had plenty of seasoned wood... well my mistake for not checking my 2 1/2 year down oak that isn't dry enough for my epa stove, so I have to buy wood to burn. He's got big chit to cut up and he's using my saw, because no matter what you do to an MS170, it isn't pulling a 24-28" bar in oak, cheery and beech. So I'm buying it, fixing it and giving it to him for an early Xmas present. I hope to come out Sunday, but was trying to take today off to take heap hauler south to get a couple cord. I have to get a couple trees dropped down at dads. I could take a week off and not get caught up.
Almost all true about me.. Except for I didn't have an 029 Out of all the saws I have owned, I've never owned one... And the 460 ain't a unicorn.. Look forward to meeting you..
You're a good dude Dex, you know you are welcome down this way anytime friend. I feel like I have known a few of you guys for a long time, good group of guys we have here..
I remember when big Dave saws were great and Ed Heard did work saws. Dean was the first internet porter with a website. I had a big bore 460 slug from him. Should have had him port the OEM cylinder. Freak you remember Romeo and Andy from NM?
Yup sure do. Andy was a good dude. Where are those guys at? Josh was 20 mins from my home town. Now he ports. Dozer dan built some runners. Big Dave had some wicked chit. Dave gave me an old race chain and told me to make it cut faster. Play around with it. So I did.... Ec was WJ back then. He had some fast stuff. I ended up with a 346 he had. Fred won a ton of races in Arkansas with it both on gas and alky. The 358xp was pretty badass too, as well as the 375 I had. Not sure who built them but they ran great for race saws. They'd melt down if you cut real wood with them.
His kids are all into motocross. He's been busy with that and not much saw racing. I think Andy just got tired of the forums. Last I heard he was still doing thinning and land clearing. I forgot about Dan. There's the Helsels also. They still race and stuff but don't post on forums any more.
Looked great! Looked better than the 660. But to be fair to both saws put 7 pin on both, tune them up and try them in the same wood with the same b\c
