I was wondering if anyone has some input on felling wedges. I had two small ones and yesterday used one and I went to hit it on and broke it. I would like to get bigger nicer ones.Any susuggestions?
K&H are the best I've used. The Hard head are nice but more expensive. I've got some madsens brand and they're ok. The original red head are ok but they don't stick in a kerf as good as the K&H.
mdavlee, where would one procure these? I'll probably just end up at the local Stihl dealer and get what they have.
Madsens or Baileys. Call madsens and ask them for K&H wedges and tell them what size trees you're using them on mostly and they'll recommend a size. Everyone I talk to on the phone there is always happy to help you out. I've got a pair of all of them up to 12" in K&H. I have a big selection of wedges since they're a consumable item. If you want to try some of the madsens brand I'll fix you up with some of the 8" ones.
I use the orange husky ones cuz I am an idiot and loose them everywhere. I swear the need to be superglued to my chaps so I don't loose them.
Made from hickory & hophornbeam (ironwood) then spray painted fluorescent orange.About 5 minutes each start to finish.
Good idea thistle. I was thinking of making one from Oak, then burnishing the thing to keep it from splintering. Not sure if that would work, but worth a shot. I've got a bunch of irons in the fire, so this may have to wait. It's in the memory banks though.
I have a couple made from hedge. Cut a few slabs off a round with the chainsaw, ran them through the planer, and free-handed the wedge shape on the band-saw.
I just use either a 6lb steel splitting wedge as a pattern or take a straight edge & draw a couple lines on the wood, cut out them on bandsaw.Put a 1/4" bevel on striking face, that prevents mushrooming.
