Where I cut wood at is about a 10 minute drive from my home. I have been dumping trees for years there and some times it can get kinda hairy since the are so thick and hard to put on the ground safely. My wife of 35 years always worries about me when I cut wood since it is in kinda a forgotten spot of the earth and I am all alone in my tree killing pleasure. So, I always call her at the start and end of my tree dumping ventures. I guess it eases her mind and I guess iffn I had a big ole trunk crushin me in the middle of no were at least they would know where to find my carcass. Probably a good thang though since I was out this afternoon and the wind was wrong, the trees were leaning wrong and I had to some serious wedging to get them to go right. My wife sure did like the call when I was done and loaded and on the way home tho.
Just like boating or hunting-- always leave a "float plan" with someone who cares enough to come find you.
Yea Same type situation middle of nowhere felling trees. Gave wife a google map. Cell phone in my pocket while in the woods. To be home at or just after dark.
Whenever I'm cutting on parents land I leave cell phone on & in my pocket. For the past 15 or so years I've been doing this 99% by myself now.If its a decent day without cold wind, rain, deep snow or hot sun Dad sometimes walks out to near I'm working at.Always wear some kind of hi vis orange or yellow gear depending on time of year/ temperature - can be a t shirt, sweatshirt, hoodie and/or carhartt coat with orange vest over it. When cutting on other people's land I do the same & sometimes Dad tags along if he feels like it.Not often though. When I'm milling or bucking up stuff in the backyard here in town, there's always at least 1 neighbor home at the time.
Always a good idea to let someone know where you'll be, regardless of if you're cutting wood, hiking, camping, etc. If you're off the beaten path, someone oughta know in case you don't show up at home on time
X2 on having the phone on you and not in the truck or on the tractor. Had a local guy get pin a few years ago and busted him up.Phone was on the tractor, a neighbor finally heard him yelling! Gary
When I go to "my" wood scrounge site, I have no service for phones and it is usually a minimum 2 hr trip. "Call me when you're on the blacktop" (highway) is standard. Also knows where I cut-just in case. More than one acquaintance has met his demise in the woods cutting. I always cut whatever is down-never standing for this guy...that is, when I'm by myself and in the woods.
My honey won't even let me outa the house without my cel. When she's down in Portland (hr away) I have the neighbor across the road on the cel's numbers. As much as I dislike phones in general, I gotta admit having it with me is no big deal and could be really important sometime.
Always good to have a plan, I know 2 people that had accidents, ones a paraplegic, the other is no longer with US.
This is true. I remember you telling me you got sooooo sick of hooking that dam coil of phone wire to your truck every time you went to cut wood. Thank god they came out with cell phones.
I take my cell phone with me when I go. Prolly should increase my life insurance that would go to wifey while working in this woods I work in.
An old friend of the family (passed away years ago) used to cut wood for a living all winter. He'd head down into the woods early in the morning and not be seen back home until 5 or 6 every day. Worked alone down in the woods about a mile. No phone. No radio. I remember, as a kid, it was no big deal. Many did it. Just the way it was. Yeah, I'm OK with a small cel in my pocket I guess. I still hate it when it rings tho...
