Thanksgiving was just last week and many members here shared what they are thankful for. It seems that many of us have been blessed with the loved ones and circumstances in our lives. Not all are so lucky though. Sometimes very bad things happen to good people as we all know. My favorite charity and one that our family donates to is St. Judes Hospital because they do so much for families of children with cancer and other potentially fatal diseases. What are some of you favorite charities or ones that you donate to?
We give to many things that are local but shy away from the national things as we learned long ago that too much of those dollars get eaten up in administrative costs.
I do the Bucket Runs for the Salvation Army when I go from store to store. Give old stuff to Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Donate to help rehabilitate wild animals.
I heard that on the radio this morning, the attorney general was speaking of how as much as 47% is taken away by fees and the remaining money gets to the charity. Kinda sad
I agree that with large national charities more get eaten up by administration the only way some of these huge issues will be solved is with these large groups . No local charity will be able to research and solve cancer . Just a thought . ration,
I do a few times a year. Last weekend, I was at lowes and the fireman had their helmets upside down taking donations. I gave.
Children's Make a wish foundation - I volunteered at the cancer ward for kids many times, puts the biggest smile on their faces. Physical stuff goes to a local church charity that employs re-hab addicts, I give the guys on the dock first dibs on my clothes before sending them to be sold for the charity My employer runs a United way campaign yearly, and you can supposedly direct funds into your local community, to me it's a big stunt by the corporation to funnel money(for PR reasons) into a charity - yeah there is a ton of money eaten up by "administration" in UW
+1 Then there are competing websites ( watchdogs) that rate which charities spend how much on what. For some charities, the ratings are all over the spectrum between different rating groups. We give to St. Judes and our local church knows where the donations should go instead of advertising and telemarketers.
Salvation Army, veterans groups and the local pet shelters are the ones I try to help. I don't give to the ones with high paid CEOs.
When giving Do some research Lots of info out there filter thru to the truth is sometimes tough. CEO compensation , etc ...
+1 Usually, if you keep it local, you can see where the money goes. But there's some good ones nationally too.
That's a great point. Local charities are great but extremely limited in their ability to address the big challenges like treating and potentially curing cancer and other fatal diseases. There are several websites that breakdown how charities spend the money they receive
We like to give locally to our church, animal shelter, food banks and homeless shelters plus a a couple larger national groups. This year we are giving to Doctors Without Borders because of the Ebola work they have been involved with. This is the web site I use to look at a group for financial stewardship. http://www.charitynavigator.org Great thread
The fischer house is a great one..only 3% goes to admin fees..the rest go directly to the charity...oh with them you can also donate your flyer miles and they never expire..
