I buy only when needed. We have one chain per saw. When that wears out, then we buy another. On the sharpening, we carry a dremel type tool with us at all times and if the chain needs filing, it takes only a few minutes and then back to work. That way not many dollars are tied up with extra chains.
Must be close to cutting season on the lower 48. Liked the LPX, used it for 8 cord in Oct, looks barely used. Fast cutter ! Have fun ! My next order will have a couple wedges, handy to have close by now & then.
Shipping is real fast. Make sure they have your parts in stock though. That can hold up any order. Prices are good.
I don't know how a person could do that. I end up swapping chains frequently, and I don't think I'm hitting dirt. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Wedges are a lifesaver.
What type of wood? Dirty wood ? I was felling, liming, bucking, 95% green, standing birch, in the woods. Couple live & a couple dead spruce. I was amazed after last year, when I went thru 80% of an RS.
I have 4-5 chains with me at all times. A lot of firewood cutting involves dirty wood on the ground, yard trees with rot in them, yard trees with other things in them... I also used chisel chain. If I'm pressed for time, or I hit a rock or steel, I swap chains. If not i'll swipe the file a few times. i carry 16, 20" and 24" chains with me, normally two of each. depending on which saws I have out.
I do the same thing, I bring a battery powered dremel tool to the field with me. It's a time saver for sure...
I always am cutting stuff on the ground and I'm sure it's got some muck on it. I guess I just am inpatient. When I see the big chips turning to more dust...that chain comes off and is thrown in the pile to be sharpened. I can get a solid couple hours out of a chain, and that's about it.
