Wonder how a 70 DL chain would fit? That was the old standard for a 20" bar.

Also, does Sugi spec a DL count for the chain?

I imagine it would fit great. I have at least 8 20" chains and I'm not going to shorten them for one bar. I am going to do a little more measuring and see if I can drill new adjuster holes in the Sugihara bar. Only thing I worry about is the oiler hole still catching the slot on the saw.

Have you tried holding the bar out as far as needed to see if you have enough room in the slot? Looks like it's gonna get close. The other problem is that when you move the bar tail so far away from the sprocket, you can get premature wear on the heels of the tie-straps and the ramps of the bar tail (from the chain 'peening' the bar) unless you run the chain banjo-tight, which will of course create even more wear in other areas.

I'm sure all this comes down to compatibility. This Sugihara is labeled to fit Stihl and Husky (with a stud adapter I'm sure). Possibly why the adjuster holes are where they are (and they're actually a larger diameter than the Stihl holes).

    Welcome to FHC..

    Nice to see you :)

I have only bought a 18" bar from Randy, and it has zero tension or oil issues.

The thinner belly will definitely make a shorter overall circumference, which would lead to less links.

Good point on the tail from sprocket distance, I didn't think of that...

I'm glad to see Randy here too! I have nothing against him or his website. This is just an observation of an issue I'm having with a 20" Sugihara bar.

There was mention of an oiling issue earlier in the thread by another member on a different length bar. Personally, I have zero issues with the oiling of this particular bar.

Just to be clear, I compared the Sugihara against the Stihl bar on my 440 as well. I checked 3 different chains, all with varying usage, and came up with similar results. The older chain was 1/4 turn from max adjustment when tensioned on the Sugihara and 5 3/4 turns from max on the Stihl ES. A substantial difference - anyone who has adjusted the tension of a chain knows that 5 turns is a big adjustment.
