Please don't take this badly, but I'm afraid you are 'pizzing in the wind' (so to speak). Two stubborn 'old codgers' trying to catch up for this Winter isn't going to happen, never mind next. You have a great heart, and he's powering through, but you both need more help. Can I christen you both the 'Grumpy Old Men'? :) You say you have an 'ornery wife, so I guess she's that for a reason :D

My husband put his back out a few weeks ago (he's 44 and a plasterer). He's had to stop running, cycling, processing next years wood - basically anything but working to pay the bills. We have enough wood to last this winter and probably next but I don't want to see him processing now so have bought smokeless fuel to last us over this winter ( he is in that much pain he didn't even argue).

Sorry, to finally get to my point. You cant mess with health/age just because its what you always have done.. You have prepared ahead- he hasn't. I understand that you want to help him, but it now needs more than you and a front loader.

Paula, I ended up chatting often with a gal from England. Some of the sayings she had were hilarious, and I am sure Dennis will not take offense to your jargon, or stating what I am sure he knows :)

Dennis is the wood master on the web here in the US! Everybody knows of him or knows him. All he has to do is say the word and a couple dozen guys will show up and he knows this to be true.... He is also my friend and a good man and he has helped me more than anybody I know with wood supply when the chips where down. He something of a wood guru honestly.

He is also ornery and I wouldn't have it any other way! He just wouldn't be Dennis... His wife is a sweetheart and a keeper and also a wonderful cook! I mean wonderful cook lol.

All this is getting to one point!

bogydave if you make them move to Hollywood I'll hunt you down!  25 miles is already to far!:hair:

I also agree with this. The help he gets should be the assistance to help himself.

Well he could get wet, but not cold. Pellet Peat is a good friend of Dennis so you can be sure he will get help should it come to that.

Paula, thank you for your thoughts and no way would I take offense at those words. I know they are coming from your heart. And I've been called worse than a grumpy old man too...

I really feel for your husband. I've gone through it too many times myself. It was 30 years ago in September when I hurt my back. It was 67 years ago last summer when I had crippling polio. I've re-injured the back too many times to count but still keep pressing onward. I'm afraid to stop. However, I think perhaps age is taking a toll as I seem to be unable to do as much as I want. I remember after injuring the back the first time having to finally break down and buy some wood. That was terrible and although it took a long time before I was able to get back at the task, I did finally become able to put up wood again.

The past couple of years have been rough; 2012 I fell backwards out of a trailer; 2013 I fell in our well pit and landed on my back on top of the pump. 2014 I fell on the ice (just a couple weeks ago). Perhaps that is why I'm struggling. But for sure oldspark hit the nail on the head.

Today is one example. The fellow we're trying to help was planning on coming to see if he could cut but he was unable. He felt he had to be home as they were picking his corn today. So, my ornery wife and I did some work together (our preference). No, we did not get a lot done but this is 3 or 4 days in a row of working a little bit in the morning and a little bit in the afternoon. Together we can get it done.....I think.

I do slightly disagree with you on the point of messing with health/age. I see no reason to not move forward even if it is slower than in the past. And he has always been prepared but he was thrown a few curve balls that took him down hard. That is, 2 heart surgeries and 2 back surgeries. Now maybe facing another with the back. How can one prepare for all that? With help from friends and neighbors. That is not the ideal, but sometimes it is the best.

So this grumpy old man is still planning on working as much as he can. Besides, he loves the work and it is good for the soul.

    Dennis-
Have you seen the rubber/metal stud thingies that slip on over your shoes or boots? They really keep you from slipping on the ice.

    Dennis,

I'm 2 hours away straight west. If you want, I would be glad to come over and cut/split/stack or whatever needs done. I have a couple good saws and my 11 year old son will come too.
Would be good for him. I've got my stack set and my dad is good to go so I'm ready to help. Just let me know and I'll make plans to come over. Doesn't have to be soon, this is a standing offer. You need help, you just say the word, no excuses.

Went to the c-store to get my morning fix. drink doughnut and breakfast burrito 6.50. The thought came to me if all members sent Mr.Savage our wood guru five bucks. He would be able to replace and replenish his hoard and be able to help his neighbor. Just thinking out loud.

Just need an address. I'll help out either way. I'll be glad to work all day, or put a couple notes in an envelope. No fanfare, no recognition just want to help out a little.

Can't imagine the $ I've saved after getting off the propane!!!

    Or the lattes. :headbang:
Used to get breakfast and lunch at the work cafeteria almost every day.
Wish I had that money back. Food was good though.
