Yet another Tree Id Quiz

Have another quiz for you guys, originally thought this was a maple until I saw the leaves beneath it. Now I'm a little confused. Could be a from the tree in the background though so I'm going to need a little help with the id on this one. Here's a few pics.

 

The leaf looks like a red oak species and the tree in the foreground looks to be a maple and the smaller one in the background looks like an oak.

 

Black oak is new to me, I've dealt with red and white, but never black oak. Is that the one in the background?

 

I'm wrong. It thought the oak leaf belonged to the big on up front. The small sapling is maple. The big one on back is red oak. The big one in front is probably maple.

 

I plan on dropping the maple, the others are staying. What kind of Maple is this, Red or Sugar?

 

I would guess sugar based on the saplings...but need a leaf to confirm.

 

Tomorrow morning I'll dig through the snow to see if I can find a few to post. No promises though, the area was recently plowed.

 

Here's what your going to be looking for.... I still can confuse the sugar and red maples.

 

It's another red maple. The leaf is a red oak variety, probably northern red. Not sure on the black oak call for the tree in the background though. Looks more like a sugar maple to me.

 

The root sucker saplings are characteristic of red maple. Sugar maple bark tends to split vertically and peel along one edge, like the tree in the background.

Looks like you have a good amount of land to cut on. Have you found anything already down? That's the stuff I'd be going after first. GIBIR as we would say - "get it before it rots". I'd let a nice "crop tree" like that continue to grow more firewood for me!

 

I agree. The smaller tree in the background is a maple, definitely not oak. The leaf you have is from a red oak of some type

Rear tree looks like silver maple maybe? Young maple bark often looks similar between species

 

I think the front tree is a Red Maple. The smaller tree in the background is an oak, but not Black Oak. I'd say it looks like Scarlet Oak, or could be Northern Red Oak. The leaf is a Red Oak, I think. There is no guarantee that the leaf came from a tree directly above the place where the leaf was found.

 

Once I get what I have down taken care of I'm hitting the woods again and grabbing the fallen branches. There's quite a few beds of them. Grabbed quite a few limbs of maple and oak about 4' long.

 

It's right in an area where we're trying to get more sunlight, otherwise I'd leave it alone.
