I have to pay $80 a year to recycle paper, cardboard, foam packing, plastic and metal in Town barrels at the end of my driveway every week.
I fill as many barrels with anything that isn't worth $$ to me as I can to effect a return on that forced investment.

I shred anything for security and those shreddings gets tossed in the woods to help compensate for the trees I've taken and run through my stove.
Some lucky plant will yield the benefit of my disposed pizza boxes that I can't put in a barrel some day.
    Can't say I don't give back. :)

We don't pay for recycle directly, but I'm sure the tax man somehow builds that in. :emb:

It's not hidden in our tax rate. Garbage collection is included in that $80 ( or so, every year the rate is slightly different: $82/$86, etc. ) Bags for garbage cost $1 0r $2 each /size. Most Towns in this state have pay-to-throw garbage collection and either single or dual stream recycling.

After state and federal subsidies that $80 is what garbage/recycling collection/sorting costs per household.
One can opt out and pay ABC or another private collection if one wishes.

What is dual or single stream recycling?

I have county collected garbage centers where I have to drive it there and drop it off. These sites are free in the county, this is where I take recycle too. There the county collection centers.

I pay for private garbage service though so it will be picked up at the house
..getting lazy I guess!!! Its $12/month or $144/yr.

Single stream is where you can put all the recycling in one can. They sort it. Dual means paper in one and the rest in another can.

Ahhh.we have dual I guess? Paper I think goes into one door and glass plastic and other stuff in other...or is it all in the same one?

The county I use to live in and the one next to mine you have to seperate paper plastic and aluminum and they dont take glass??

Our centers also take old gas and used motor oil. And oil filters

There was no garbage pick up at my past home of 21 years, or in my new home now either. Besides burning, our other choice is to pay for disposal, by the pound like you said. If things were different we would recycle, but buIt's easier for us to burn the items we can rather than use our time to load, and transport, and unload, and the gas to get there also. Living in the country has it's perks, but inconveniences as well lol.
Ahhhh , we don't have trash service

Santa Claus doesn't magically slide down your chimney and fill your living room with presents for free ?

In my county, unless you live in town, you have to hire your own trash hauler. $200 and up. They don't let you burn. Now, they encourage recycling, single stream, but there is no monetary advantage to it, as you pay the same fee whether you separate or not. My one little grocery bag of garbage, after I separated the cans, bottles, paper out, then composted the vegetable scraps, was just not worth the money, so now I take the garbage to the county dump every couple of weeks, where they charge $6 per car load. It gets rather messy in the summer because of the smell/fruit flies, so I go once a week then. It is still cheaper for me.
I don't know why we can't have municipal pick up, as we pay pretty steep taxes in our county. Also, a pay-as-you-throw would be an option I would be interested in. I see my neighbors with three or four cans out, along with just as many big garbage bags, and they get charged the same as me with my one little grocery sack.

Used the burn barrel again today. Wow it makes fast work on burnable trash!
