So I got a guy that's selling "four year old oak it's so dry its really only good to get a fire started but you don't want to use it for full time burning" so I asked him about it and he said it's not cut or split and just to let him know when I need it and he will cut and split it. He doesn't want to do it until I need it cause it's so old and really messes up his saw it cuts like dirt. So my question is has anyone ever heard of older wood cutting like this? He said he bought a log load from some lady that had it sitting in her backyard for a couple years on a trailer.
Sounds like an ignoramus!!!! Only thing with a ring of truth to it was the "it cuts like dirt" part.....................green wood cuts much easier than dry IMHO.
Sounds a little shady to me. Not sure how dry it is, even many year old stuff not CSS'd holds moisture. Cutting like dirt sounds like rotten wood. I'd have to go look & then be a good price,
Sounds like BS. Round form for 4 years is likely punky (cuts like dirt). I certainly wouldn't pay for it
If it has been laying on the ground, then perhaps it is not good. However, many times folks will think it is all bad because oak tends to get punky for about an inch or so in and then the wood is solid. If that is all it is, you will have some good stuff. I'd suggest you have him cut a few pieces so you can see for yourself what it is like. If it is punky, he won't be able to roll the log to complete the cut.
Took me almost 2 years to get my 20 cord load of Oak c/s/s, and at the end, it was getting like Dennis said, a little punk about 1/2" to 1" deep. Not sure why he's waiting to cut it. It's not going to get any better. Needs to get c/s/s ASAP. Oh, and I wonder how "dry" it is.
Cut some Oak out of an area that had been logged much more then 4 years before I cut it (more like 10 or so) wood cut harder but seasoned will be harder to cut but the wood was not dry enough to dry right away.
We're still working on some oak and locust from 6 years ago. Like others have said, a little rot on the edges but the rest is rock hard. Tried burning but needed at least another year to be great.
My post was supposed to say not dry enough to burn right away. Does the edit function go away after a certain amount of time?
I think he's pulling your leg. Go check it out yourself so you could see it. The proof is in the pudding..
Thanks for all the great responses and advice. He told me that he bought this from a lady whos husband had died he drove log trucks and had this one sitting in the backyard she wanted it gone and he purchased it from her. I will be approaching this with caution but he only wants $50 for a pickup load so that might be worth a shot there. Ill see if I can get over to his place and look at it sometime in the next couple weeks. I told him Im not in a big hurry for it Im just trying to get ahead for next year but if this stuff is still in log form I doubt it will be ready next year, but for $125 a cord I probably cant afford not to stock up on some of this.
