    I'm digging what you're knowing.
You are there knowing all the circumstances.
    Good neighbors are golden .

Because you can help, you will :)

Pete, this wood is better. Not only did he get quite a bit cut last summer but he also split it small and got it stacked and top covered. I hope they stay warm and I'm betting he will be better off than last year.

Not to be a cold hearted SOB, but I've gotta agree with Bogy. Take care of yourself first. Sounds like you can't even get done what you want to get done for yourself. Isn't there a parable of the 10 virgins that kinda fits this? Sounds like this guy was expecting help instead of preparing for it since the bailout last winter...
That being said, I think right now, you are the one that needs the help! Tell the neighbor that you would like to help out, but are suffering your own setbacks right now. Hopefully, in the future, (not too distant) you will recover enough to help him out again.

Normally yes. They do have a propane furnace and the lady told me today that she did break down and got it filled. They have perhaps enough wood for another month at most.

Just catching up with this, I feel your discomfort Dennis Backwoods Savage . You set precedence in helping your ailing neighbor in the past and feel like you need to do your part again because the circumstances with him really haven't changed. What bothers me is him knowing he needed to prepare for the winter well ahead and knowing he wasn't capable of doing it himself and he never did anything. I don't know anything about him but it's sad seeing someone that does depend on wood heat not pick up the phone to call in a delivery or call a friend or a neighbor to get on the same page as Jack Frost. And the twist (and head game for you) is your under the weather too, at your age healing is more difficult and being a wood burner is a physical job. You have to take care of #1! Your limitations are not going to improve until you heal and as you've stated many times you are concerned about your future wood supply, being 3 years ahead is concern enough at your age too. Take care of yourself first Dennis.

Well Dave, we talked about this possible situation last summer. That was after his heart surgery. Now re-injuring the back has compounded the situation. They are not what you would call well off. Not poor but they do have their problems like most of us do. So does it matter that perhaps he or I or both of us could work an hour at a shot? Over many days it will still get done. One more thing is that we have about 5 years worth of wood all ready to be burned if need be. So we are not hurting.

Perhaps I do need some help but for some reason or another, asking for help is a difficult thing to do. In addition, I bought that really light weight saw 2 years ago and that will help out a lot.

As for the virgins, yes, there is a parable about them. Not all were prepared. Yet, today I could see that he was attempting to be prepared because he had more wood than the last time I was there. Trouble is, it was cherry that was cut in late summer or early fall. He also had a little left from last winter. But regardless if he trimmed his lamps or not in time, he is a neighbor in need and I'm a neighbor indeed.

In addition to the parable you refer to, that same book also says something like this: Inasmuch as you do it unto the least of these, you have done unto me. It was also said that you should love your neighbor as yourself. Not a little bit, but the same as you love yourself. No, we'll continue to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

Dennis you're a great guy with a big heart.. I know you want to help but please be careful to not overdo it or you will need help yourself.. Pete and AC Cutter will help you but Pete needs to go easy with his new surgery too.. Wish I lived near you as I would be there too..

You're a good soul Sav, do what your heart tells you. You are the one there and the one that knows your neighbors not us. Of course you did pose the question and many of us have been there, wrestling with choices. Prayers for healing for you and the neighbor.

Locust, perhaps it is because I was born and raised on a farm where it was the normal thing if a neighbor needed help, nobody waited for an invite; they just went to help. But maybe more than that it is a combination of that upbringing and Scripture which has some very good answers to questions and also some very good guidelines on life itself.
