Paid a visit to a neighbor today. Last year I gave them wood because he hurt his back and could not cut. Early this summer he had heart surgery. Well, he was not home but his wife told me he hurt his back again. Hum... To top it off I got started today with putting up wood. Just a few days early this year as we usually start December 1. But the weather was perfect today. I may even do some tomorrow but usually do not work on Sundays. The problem I'm hitting is my own physical condition which right now is not very good. That fall last week did not help much for sure. Then yesterday my leg gave out and didn't work at all or only half way for way too long. This is one of the problems I have with the post polio thing. So this morning I head back to start and worked a whole half hour. Geeze. This afternoon I made it for an hour. So, unless we have an easy winter so I can cut many days, it might prove interesting. For sure I can't let the neighbors go without wood and we have enough but it will really cut into our wood piles. Who knows, maybe I'll end up cutting wood all next spring and summer which I really do not want to do. But, we do what we have to however we can. So, should I just let the neighbor fend for himself? I'm not really sure I could do that.
Your a good man. You do good things and god will pay you back for your good deed. Not too many guys like you. I hope you feel better. everything happens for a reason..I wish I was there to help you man. I love helping people. I wish I had someone to helpme but I guess im here to help others out but god blessed me with 3 healthy boys so thats my payback..help him out
Naw Your doing the right thing. It'll all get paid back with dividends . Though with his sore back, & your aliments. Some team work might benefit both
Well, we do but if we do help him this winter we'll still be about 3 years ahead so it is not a big problem.
That is a question only you can answer. I have had to face this myself. It's quite difficult, if you overwork a bad leg and bad back you may end up not being able to provide for yourself...... I would try to get intouch with his family, and possibly rally other neighbors. PM if you like I have had good results on finding people in the past, ammature at it but I would try if you'd like.
Yes, we will be contacting some other neighbors. He even has a brother who has some woods about 1/2 mile from his place.
Dennis, you are a very giving fellow. That being said, you have already stepped up and done your part. Based on the physical limitations your dealing with, you need to concentrate on getting your wood supply in order first. If after that happens, and your physically able, then perhaps you can help the neighbor again. My point being that he had all summer to come up with a solution for his situation. I believe you have enough stress going right now and really should not need to take on the additional load for the forseeable future.
Well, if worst comes to worst, we'll just feed his stove from the wood already stacked and I'll keep on cutting. If need be, I know many who would come in to give me a hand if needed. One thing for sure is that we don't want to run ourselves out of wood.
Backwoods Savage , help your neighbor, seems like it will bother you if you dont. Do what your soul requires. Don't worry about getting less than three years ahead, you can season your wood in one michigan summer with a solar kiln. Amazing how they work when you need to season some wood but because of space constraints, injury, kindness, or the fact that you are a new burner, and you don't have the time to air dry for three years.
Not sure why they can't buy (barter) a few cord . however Free CSS'd, (delivered? ) prime time, seasoned wood is much easier & better .
True enough Dave. However, there are times when neighbors need help. I know these people well and they are not trying to take advantage. They are good people who are just having a rough time.
Not at all Pete. This guy lives about a mile from us. Btw, the wet wood burner did better this year. Cut some during the summer. It was oak tops. The logs were taken either 2 or 3 years ago, so, of course, it must be ready to burn...
