So yesterday I was picking up some gas for my outdoor equipment and saw a tree company taking down some huge oak trees that had to be at least 24" diameter. They had a crane and a log truck with a grapple along with a big chipper for the branches and the truck had around 5 cords on it and i talked to the tree company owner and he offered to drop it for $200.00 since I was 2 miles away. I don't have a mighty chainsaw or hydraulic splitter which would also require vertical operation so I had to pass :( Really can't afford the splitter and big saw so I had to let this go.. Wish I'd taken pics...

You don't need a huge saw to tame a beast. Years ago i cut up astorm damaged oak for a buddy. I'm 5'7" and could just barely see over the trunk laying on the ground. I used my 310 with an 18" bar as that was all i had. I would cut my length as deep as possible and then noodle and or split chunks off wth wedges. Was it a lot of work yes. Was it worth it. No some bastage stole most of the wood. I was not burning at the time and was planning on selling the wood. Did not charge my buddy anything cause he's a buddy.

Coulda' taken it, then done some cipherin' on how to deal with it afterward.
I would have had a REAL hard time saying no at that price.
Sorry for being an armchair QB.

Wish you were a bit closer Ray, I have two saws and a vertical splitter, we could have knocked it out in a weekend and split the wood.

You keep seeing wood that far away & asking, you'll score some soon.

    Yucky weather right now anyway,

    There's always next time :) :)

This was red oak which is common around here and logs laying on the ground would have invited the subterranean termites which are also common around here plus with Christmas around the corner the funds just aren't where they need to be even at $200.00.. If deals like this were common I'd be saving for a beefier chainsaw and splitter.. I could have borrowed a coworkers Iron & Oak splitter but I still need a bigger chainsaw than the Stihl 023 with 16" bar..

Yeah, we get it, it's just our nature to look for all possible avenues to get firewood.
This isn't called FHC for nothing.

you could have bought a 50cc saw here, cut up the oak all Winter on decent weekends and sold the saw again here in the Spring if you really didn't want a bigger saw hanging around not getting used.

I bet there's several guys near you that would have helped cut and split it for a share. It goes much faster that way.

Next time take the wood Ray. I noodle, you split, you keep the wood. No problem helping a fellow hoarder.

Oh well Raybonz. Maybe next time. In the future you may be able to find someone nearby who will process it for you for a fee. Money or wood. Might be worth looking around for now for future. Some guys post on craigslist under "firewood" for services they offer. Now you will have to get through the Red Oak withdrawal syndrome and move on to different wood my friend! Hop to it!:axe:
