Ugly power

Here's a load of uglies for ya...



I have a 4x4x4 bin made of pallets that I throw uglies in. I was going to burn them in the fire pit, but once it was full I figured hey, its a 1/2 a cord of good wood. So I started burning them in the house. I heated the house all weekend with uglies. Had it toasty warm in here even though it was cold and blowing a gale outside. Even got a 7 hour burn out of pile of apple, cherry, and maple chunks. Not bad for some uglies.

 

I have burned all but one wagon load of my uglies this year.

 

I like using the uglies for night burns. It's seems that they give a long hot burn I guess from all the twists and so on...

Someone in an adjacent borough is advertising a free pickup load of "logs" that he can't split by hand. I'm tempted, but also a little afraid.

 

Come on Jon get your sign in the back window "ain't skeered" and go for it.

I usually keep them in a pile down by the pit but I'll carry a few up from time to time.

 

Without question. I'll probably stop by tomorrow, it can't be more than a mile or two away.

Just finished up my ugly pile this weekend. I had been giving them away but from now on I'm keeping them. I still have some big chunks in the driveway that I can't split by hand. Friend of mine is coming over with his splitter for those.

 

Nothing wrong with uglies,roughly 90% of what I've burned so far this month is odds/ends,milling scrap,short twisted gnarly chunks & other junk.Should have enough to last another 2-3 weeks.

 

I got a good burn from a bunch of softball sized chunks. I could pack them in tight in the stove. I was a little afraid of the stove going nuke with a bunch of small pieces, but they were all knotty and the small air gaps gave a good long burn. Lots of heat. A mess of them are from a friend's apple tree. He had a HUGE apple tree that came down in a storm. The trunk was 36" wide. I had never seen an apple tree so big. I offered to help his cut it up and haul it away . He started before I got there and had cut off a bunch of 6" logs. His logic was that the 6" logs would be easier to pick up and move around. Ugh. So that is where all the apple softballs came from.

 

So, what we're all saying ugly is beautiful!

 

Dam straight Free BTUs. Good call on saving them. I had a bunch of uglies and blocked up wood that was too long for the splitter for some reason, and I saved every last one of the cut-offs and uglies. I bet I had 1/2-2/3 of a full cord of wood. I am burning them through the shoulder season now! Lots of heat.

 

I ran into the same thing once on a huge water oak I was scrounging. Homeowner sliced the trunk up into about 6in rounds. I just took all the limbs
