Congrats on the new property! Looks like you got some real nice ones there!! I'm hoping to buy the woods adjacent to mine someday. It's all in my family - I have 14 on the end of my great-grandparents old 77 acre farm. There's 2 other 30 acre lots, and the one next to mine is all woods. If it ever changes hands, it's going to be me, annexing it!!
Thanks. Sounds familiar. We have been coveting this property ever since we moved here about 7 yr. ago. Finally went on the market at a fair price, so we scraped up all the money we could, including change in the sofa and car seats to squeeze into it.
Progress report: Wood bucked and loaded in the pickup. Quality over quantity. Notice the redrot in the round at the lower left at the tip of the bar. This tree was definitely on the way out. Nothing but a stump and sawdust left. And there's that "dude" again. This time she's driving the tractor. Ready for splitting. Probably Thanksgiving day if weather permits. All together a great day in the woods. Best part was sharing it with my wife and dogs.
And thanks for sharing it with us too! Tell that helper dude, she did a nice job with that tree today.. Is always a pleasure for me to get some cherry, I have a few, but I'm not cutting them down unless their dead or on their way out which isn't very often. Congrats on the property, it looks nice and dry with a good selection of nice big hardwoods. Can't beat those nice old white oaks either!
Good work. I've seen some big cherries that only had about 5 inches of wood holding them up at the base from that same rot in your round. Good job getting it before it went too bad. I love cherry Awesome looking land, enjoy it. I'd love to have land like that someday
Yeah, I hate killing cherries, but they are first generation successional type trees, so a lot of them don't make it. I found a real nice, tall, straight, healthy, ~12" DBH cherry on the new property and several smaller healthy cherries. They should be able to seed any openings that may arise in the future and keep a nice stock of them for the foreseeable future.
Good that you have some nice ones. Thinning out the unhealthy ones is one of the best way to encourage healthy growth
Love Cherry & love being in the woods.Even for just a nice walk.Quite a few Cherries on parents 10 acres,most all of them are either less than 12" diameter and/or less than straight trunks though. Biggest & nicest one is in a semi-protected cove on a SE facing sloping hill barely 30 feet from their NW property fence about 20" DBH,with a couple gradual curves to the trunk - up about 9 feet,then straight for 5 feet then another slight curve before it forks about 25 feet up.One of the 2 forks is dead,one of these days I'm gonna have to strap on the climbing gear & remove that before it rots off & leaves a hole for decay to start.Can only reach about 16 feet with the pole saw unfortunately.
Get on that dead fork soon. I'm no pro, but it seems like cherry seems to rot way too easy and way too fast. Then again, if it kills the tree, it sounds like you'll have some beautiful lumber.
