The new Husky 545 made me smile while cutting up some Ash just now !!! Which is a nono. Still spittin out chips lol. Im tellin ya... The 550xp and 545 hate the Ash with a passion ! P.S. Ash is a very nice grain wood. Its a shame the lil booger bugs are eatin it all up
Not yet. But local forestry people are telling everyone to harvest all ash if possible.... As they will die... And the bugs will keep spreading. So.... I dont have to be told twice to cut an Ash lol Should hold an all ash green buggy GTG up here !
Very nice. I took some dead ash yesterday and sure gives off good heat. Nice work. Great weather to be in the woods. The saw looks nice. Time to get it dirty ehh. Have fun and be safe...
Down in the chainsaw section still debating on which one to get? http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/550-xp-husky.8168/
Ash is great. That's all I'm burning this year. I actually over fired my stove with two splits of dry ash.
Ash is going to be my "premium" wood for this year, and next - January stuff. I'll be bringing that up next, after the soft maple on the porch gets used up. One that that puzzles me.... Where is the heartwood? Ash usually has a distinct heartwood when it's that big, if it hasn't been dead a long time. You sure that's not Norway Maple? I've been fooled by the bark more than once - it can look just like white ash. Norway is supposed to be somewhere between soft maple and hard on the BTU scale, so it's probably about the same as ash anyways. It's just as easy to split and probably has comparable drying time. Still some big bootyful rounds either way! Lots of BTU junk in that trunk!!
Don't be fooled by the heart of ash. He does have ash and not maple. Here are a couple pictures of ash. (There are a few small pieces of elm mixed in there.) But notice the difference in the size of the hearts of the different logs.
You really do not have to hurry on getting the ash, even if it is dead. We're starting our 12th year of cutting ash after the borer made himself home here. But this year we are seeing a lot more of them down. Some broke off the tops but most are rotting at the root then toppling over. Wood is still good though.
