Me and my MS361 cut down this cherry tree today. We just closed on 6 more acres adjacent to us on Friday and the first order of business was trail improvement. This tree was about 50-60 ft tall, but you can see that it had a big area of missing bark from the loggers who cut this property 2 yrs ago. Crown was >90% dead. Poor thing had absolutely no chance. So, next stop, my firewood pile. It was a pretty straightforward fall, but you can see how curvy the lower trunk was and what you can't see is that I had a pretty narrow window (straight down the trail) to drop it without getting hung up in some of the bigger trees. Also, you can kind of see that the right hand side of the stump was a little rotten from a dead second stem that fell off a couple years ago. All went well. BTU's will be appreciated.
You improved the shooting lane for deer too. Looks like you'll be busy CSS'ing stacking with the new acreage

One of the rules of FHC is that any NEW property wood, that you have closed on in the last 90 days, you have to share recently felled BTUs. When's a good time for me to drop by and pick some of that up?
Nice job Mike. I neglected to account for the slight lean at the top of a small Oak this summer, and it went where I didn't want it to go. Didn't matter in the woods, but made for an interesting test of my ability to run like the devil. So, of course we'll need pics of the progress tomorrow.
Congratulations on becoming a new owner of that woods Mike. That curvy trunk is pretty much standard when it comes to cherry. Around here it is odd if you see one straight. Tis okay though. Still makes good firewood.
Ahem... That guy is my wife! Trust me, she was well out of the way when I dropped it. Even though everything went to plan, I did have to retrospectively explain to her the concept of "when you hear a crack and the tree starts falling, you drop your saw and run like there's a bear chasing you." She got a real kick out of that.
Yep, they all seem to grow in a spiral/corkscrew pattern. The big, old, straight ones are mostly up on the Allegheny Plateau, NW PA.
Oh yeah, I see now. Not sure how Weatherguy and I made that mistake....from 60' away. Pretty obvious now.
Found this rub about 50 yds farther down the trail and a real big, fresh scrape another 50 yds further.
Looks like a very fine hardwood stand you've acquired - congratulations Beech, maple, red oak, and chestnut oak from the leaves I see anyways. Having some space of your own is like nothing else on earth - I love walking my property..enjoy
Yep, that's about right. We were out cleaning up a trail for us and the dogs to walk on. There some nice old white oaks, black birch and plenty of tulip tress mixed in too. Actually, our adjacent 10 acres is even more mature, last cut variously 10-75 yr ago. As I said, this new property was last thinned 2 yr. ago. It makes for a nice diversity of age classes and the wildlife love it.
