Firewood Identification

    Sassy. Will smell kinda like licorice. its quite distinct. Browse will smell like lemon pledge. Some of the leaves have lobes that make them look like mittens.
    The chestnut oak i have is a bit deeper and no orangish ring. BL more expanded.

    It's sasafrass... Like LP said, good shoulder season wood, rot resistant and if split small, makes good kindling or fire starter pieces. It will have a strong, distinct smell to it after splitting.

    It will lose a lot of weight when it's dry.

    Thanks for the replies and suggestions I also now believe its sassafras after a little research I never would have guessed that!

    100% Sassafras, the sweet smell, super easy to split, the orange tint under the outermost bark, and that dirty straw interior. All signs point to the fras.

    All of the cottonwood I've had was easy to split. Maybe I got lucky :D

    Yes it's sweet with a bite, the best my woodpile has ever smelled after I split it:)
