It was dark once I got home from picking it up, but scored this 3point splitter off of CL for 200 bucks. and the guy will let me cut as many tops from a woods he had logged for nothing. pics suck because its dark, but just yer basic 3 point splitter....this will be my winter project. It has a cross 4.5"x22" cylinder on it with with a prince auto return valve and 3/4" hoses. I'm going to make it go horizontal and vertical, so that means changing the 3 point mount all together. I'll have the 3 point mount off to the side, then I'll have to cut the wedge off and weld on a thick end plate, and will be making a 4 or six way sliding wedge for it. That will depend on how I'm going to set it up. Not sure if i want to add a pump and motor for a stand alone setup, or put a pto pump on the little kubota. (stock pump only pumps 5.5 gpm).
It will be something like this when its done. Can be used horizontal or vertical and not take a a ton of space on or off the tractor. Got leads on a used 21gpm pto pump for dirt cheap too.
Looks like a good project. .... I'm gonna look for a splitter that's in disrepair over the winter as well as an extra 24"-30" ram, going to try and build a dedicated firewood trailer later this winter out of the boat trailer I use for logs....it'll have its own 8-10HP engine that will run both the dump bed and the tongue mounted horizonral/vertical splitter.
Cool, splitter builds are always fun to watch. There's been some great builds on here over the last year.
I split a few years direct plumbed to my tractor with a 8.6 gpm pump...I highly recommend the pto pump That said, I split a lot of wood on a $125 investment and pretty sure I'll get my money out of it when i get off my ash and sell it.
the more i google stuff, I'm really considering doing a front mount, front end loader mounted upside down splitter for the large rounds... sit on my butt and run a tractor..... I like the idea of that.... but it would be so much more productive on a bobcat/skidsteer
That operation on 76 that you and Dex were talking about had one of those out. I just dont know about how efficient that would be once you have 2-3 larger chunks laying there. For bigger stuff yes it would be good but once its a split in half or quarters will you need another set of hands to feed into the splitter? Or move the tractor around to get each small piece?

ok, so a little progress, not much but mainly parts collecting. I bought a prince PTO 21gpm pump off craiglist for 100 bucks a few weeks ago. Then this week a was able to score a couple things down at the scrap yard.. I'm going to make a 4 way wedge. It will be welded to the ram slide, not adjustable. So this weeks early score was $21.79 for a 21 gallon compressor tank to be used as a hydraulic tank, 3 point tool bar for the base of the splitter 3point attachment, and a couple pieces of hardened cutting edges. I hope to really do some cutting and welding over the xmas holiday. I'd like to put it to use now... I picked up a 1" thick plate that is 6"x12" from work a while back that will be the butt plate. started off as: my hi-tech cad drawing of how it will basically look: some revisions: The PTO pump: the hyd tank, tool bar and cutting edges: it will be mounted like so: the pump is setup for 1 1/4" suction and 3/4" discharge. I happen to have some 1 1/4" hose for that, just trying to find a cheap way to attach them to QD fittings, as QD 1 1/4" fittings are not cheap. I'll need to buy a 3/4" pressure line to feed the valve and come up with some sort of filter and breather/filler neck for the tank. That will be a little difficult as the tank surfaces are round, but we'll make them work. Stay tuned.
Looks like you're frying an egg in that one pic. Interested to see how it comes out. I'm always impressed with good fab work.
