I went back through my logs from last year and I found several notes where I had it over 800 degrees above the door. One note read "well over 800 degrees and rising". The first time was during week 1. I think Hollywood had his warmer but I was no where near gentle with mine.
It was really fun- like getting a loaner Porsche with instructions to try and break it.

I don't know how you guys are doing this- I had mine up to 650 (actual, not thermometer 'estimate) on the stove top and we had to move out into the barn for a while. We are all fairly close to each other and I cannot run my stove nearly that hot and live in the house. Youse guize leavin' windows open or somethin'? :) A very nice by- product of a hotter burn is that not only does the window not turn black, it actually is self- cleaning.

By the way, what is very different about this stove compared to older, 'steel box' stoves is that this stove radiates a LOT of heat out the front. My stove is in my living room and it faces the couch we normally park on; it is quite noticeable from a surprising distance.... maybe 10 or 12 feet and not directly in front of the stove either. This whole change is like moving from a Model T to a 2000+ <anything>, I notice new differences in how this stove acts every single day.

last year someone made a video of the stove melting butter from 5 feet away. I thought that was pretty cool.
I think my hottest burn over 800 had something to do with me falling asleep and ended with all the windows open.

FYI, got a condar catalyst thermometer with a 6.5 inch probe on the way.
Gonna try setting it up in the probe port when it comes in.
Looking for some bending advice from BDF to get around
the carriage assembly and still being close to the cat.

I have found 7 and 8 in long ones on ebay for $25. They had 2.5in face. might be hard to read unless you put the operating range on the bottom side.

The 6 in. stem cat thermo on the Condar site advertized a 1.5" dial face. More important, what diameter is the stem? Wonder if the threaded port we got plugged with a screw will have to be bored out?

Post in this thread #727: the hole in the front of the stove is a 1/4-20 threaded hole. The clear or drill diameter should be .201, or just slightly bigger than 3/16" (0.1875"). An 1/8 probe will of course fit but it would be sloppy. 3/16" would be OK but the probe would not retained. Best would be a 3/16" probe diameter with a 1/4-20 threaded portion up near the end of the thermometer itself but I do not know if anyone makes anything like that.

I think the only bend you will have to make is to bend the end of the probe, the last 1 1/2" or so, slightly up so it tip does not contact the combustor itself when the sled moves up and forward. Otherwise I think it is a pretty straight shot. Once you get the radiator off, it is quite easy to see what is going on and what you will have to do though.

Oh yeah! I forgot that I literally burned the red zone off the thermometer. Is that bad? :picard:
I still really want to believe that was a defect in the red paint.

The Condar I got for the Dutchwest is 3/16.
Some (not all) probes I have gotten have come with a donut magnet that slips down the shaft (easy, son!)  and holds the probe level. The probe I ordered from Woodstock for the Fv had the magnet, I think. With this set up you might be able to have the probe tip within 1/2" (recommended) of the cat face, and if the probe didn't extend too far over the edge of the cat, you could pivot the probe up by hand in case the sled still hit it. When you let go, the magnet grabs the probe again and returns it to leverl. Of course you could always retract the probe every time you open the stove but it seems like a little more hassle...

Of course, you'll have to add the magnet thickness if you're gonna cut the probe to a length.

Thats some good info. I wonder who WS contracted to make their thermometers for them? There was no mention of a magnet in the description of the condar thermometer. I'd say worst case I'd find a way to clip the back side of the probe so that it stayed in place. Hopefully the bends I need to make will keep the probe tip from being in contact with any sled parts and this will all work out.

ahhh, now that I see a picture of it (thank you BTW) maybe I can see of I can find a magnet that will work.

You might inquire when you order the probe, if the magnet is included, weather you order it from Woodstock or elsewhere...
