Exactly. I know my arsenal is nothing compared to most here; but I often find myself wishing I had gone ahead and gotten a bigger saw. My 291 does all I ask of it, but sometimes extra power would be nicer. That saw was what I could afford at the time, but I still wish I would've sprung some extra bucks for at least the 391. Hindsight is 20/20 eh?

Anyways, one day ill have a nice 441 or 461 to compliment that 291 :D. And then another day I'll get me a 660 :saw:

As a stock saw a 461, 064, 390, and 7900 will pull a 28-32" as well or better is why they get the gutless label. If you don't have anything like that already you never notice that and the poor balance and weak oiler.

I must have got a good one i guess ,mine pulls a 36 inch bar fine dogged in ,before it was ported with the stock opening made bigger and a dual port cover it was a good running saw ,i ran another one with a stock muffler ,it seemed choked up and gutless ,loggers here run 660's all day long and like them over the 460's ,there has to be a reason ,most of them are stock cylinders with just muffler mods ,a few have "woods" stickers on them so they have been hopped up inside ,the oiler is the same as 461 or 460 ,mine has the h/o one ,maybe we get better ones out west ,lol ,with a 28 inch bar in a 30 second cut i think my ported 461 was 1 second faster when Mastermind ran them ,i know with a 36 inch bar the 660 feels like it has more tourque ,it can be leaned on more ,on the balance ,the newer wraps do balance better than the older ones with a long bar ,older style the saws felt a lot heavier to me

The older 066 would run circles around a newer one. When we were doing the build off there were stock red light saws cut right with ported new ones. I'm going to have a couple to rebuild and hopefully there's a good cylinder or two. I would like to be able to stand to run it over a 372 if it will make more power.

Wrap saws you guys get our west have better oilers (HO) compared to midwest and east coast standard models. a muffler mod makes a helluva difference on a newer saw. They have more tq that any 80cc saw, choked up or not, but most guys (midwest and east coast, don't run long bars like you guys do, so comparing a 461 to a 660 with a 25" is going to be close, except one weighs 15lbs more). the 390 is a damm good runner and will oil well, as well as a 461.

When did dolmar change oilers? my 7900 ripped, but wouldn't oil enough for a 28" bar. I can't imagine running a 32,34 or 36 on one. it was a good 25-28" bar saw imo. when was the last 064 made? 1993? lol.

We've come full circle, at least with Stihl. Their latest offerings are empty stainless steel cans with outlets that while a little small for us saw guys, aren't designed to choke a saw into emissions compliance.

I was referring to the 660, hence the thread and response, not the 461, 441 stuff, unless they now come with dual ports and bigger outlets than 3/8 openings...

You just said "newer saws". ;)

The 461's opening is bigger than a stock 460's was, can't remember if the slot is still there like the 460 or not. The baffle inside is there just like the 460 as well.

The 660 is well known to respond well to muffler surgery. Also there is a factory dual-port setup ( 1121 140 0603 ) available for it that should not void the warranty. It will look similar to this aftermarket unit.

you're knitpicking me. Read the context. talking about 660's and I said newer SAW. meaning newer 066/660.

I don't know when the last 64 was built. It's been a while though. The 7900 I've got right now will mill with a 32" bar with .063" chain.

how old is it? just curious as I've been out of the loop for a few years. I see the dealer support still sucks and the saw still has the same issues that it had, though... I've had a couple 064's.. love em... sold em to keep the 660 as my big mutt. no piston work, but it works for my big saw. I have one 064 left to put back together and need a lathe to do what I want to do to it. the mill won't cut assenctrically and I can't make a mandrel to fit the piston it it... lol

It's a blue one. I don't know the ago on it. What kind of machine work are you wanting to do? I have a 54mm mandrel cut at home for the chamber and base.

Thanks for the very generous offer !!!
I have made a few already, but I would really like to see how you make them, then mooch off of your info. I am really curious as to how you get the "hood" to pop out and if they are 3 sided, or are 4 sided .............. etc..

Allways trying to learn a few tips/tricks .......... having a few welders and lots of sheet to play with is relaxing - even just thinking about it now, I get warm fuzzies over hearing the TIG on AC @ MAX Hz and 400 amps :bug:

I pulled the saw plasic off today and did a bunch of cleaning. I also pulled out the decomp and got it working, it just had a build up on it, works fine now. I put in a new plug as well as a fuel filter and new fluids. I didn't get a new air filter, so I clean this one (it has the HD2) as best I could. I put Teflon tape on the threads for the compression tester and got it to hold just under 120PSI. I held that pressure for a couple of minutes before I released. it I put it all back together and fired it up. Seemed to run the same. I did ajust the high side on the carb, all the way clockwise and it made a noticeable difference on RPM. I haven't tried to cut anything yet, and it likely won't happen till later in the week. I did verify is a 8 pin.

All the way clockwise (facing the right hand side of the saw) is full lean. It will increase the RPMs of the saw with no load but too far and it will also lose power in the cut and increase the chances of damaging the piston/cyl from a lean condition.

Correct. I should have specified that I did that to see how it would react. I carry a small screw driver with my tools and will adjust accordingly. But thank you.

120PSI is certainly low. I'm thinking rings?
