Soft Maple?

    On my way down the trail with the last load from up top I noticed this tree, looks like a red maple.

    Looks like it might of froze split and started healing before giving itself up to your woodpile

    Looks like the bark, not a 100% on that though, take it anyway, BTU's is BTU's:cool:

    Yes, but it may be a bit further along than you wish. That stuff will turn to punk fast if you let it.

    I'm betting some of that is bad, and yes that is red maple. The stuff is a fantastic daytime or mixed load wood......burns clean and has a wonderful smell when burning. But if left standing dead for a long time, especially on a snag like that, it can get punky. Worth cutting it down and having a look, though!

    Put the saw in it and let us know if it's still good.
    I just got done with a soft Maple that split, and the first 3' at the split is iffy, but the rest is great wood.

    Been burning soft Maple from last fall for about 2 weeks.......great stuff. I'm liking it more all the time.
