New Project

The final coat of wax was done tonight, I'll start on the next batch soon.

 

I'll be getting the rounds and the branches for this project this weekend before the rain hits, we'll take the sleds back in with a chainsaw.

The plans are to make it out of some downed Hemlock.

I'm doing another 16 after this small deer, I'll do a better job sanding on the coasters this time.

 

Is it me or do some of these measurements seem short, especially the head and the body.
Body: One 12-inch log with 6-inch diameter.
Head: One 4-inch log with 4-inch diameter.
Legs: Four 24-inch branches with 1-inch diameter.
Neck: One 10-inch branch with 2-inch diameter.
Antlers: Two 12-inch branches with 3/4-inch diameter.
Tail: One 8-inch branch with 1/4-inch diameter.

Just about all of them seem off to me. Legs seem too long, head too short, and body seems too short

 

That's the beauty of making those things out of logs - no measurements needed, cut three times measure once
Just find a decent straight log in the 6-8" range and a one a bit smaller, some maple/pine saplings.
Your wife will be extra happy when you make 2 or three of them

You've got me inspired on the coasters - cut some on my radial saw today.
First few were dead dogwood has a nice pink hue, but they are split badly
Then I tried a piece of what we determined was sourwood over in the woodhood, it has a nice color as well but unfortunately this one has a pin hole all the way through the pith

 

They look great, nice job woody

 

Throw some pics up when you're done, I'm use to seeing the types of wood we have on our property, I've never seen sourwood before.

 

Thanks Rock, the two coats of wax really made the difference.

We're sending them to my sister (she has Thanksgiving) so she can hand them out to my other sister and brother.

 

We decided on these measurements. After I get this out of the woods I'll start getting ready for the big melt, I think Mondays high will be 61.
Body: One 24-inch log
Head: One 12-inch log
Legs: Four 24-inch branches with 1-inch diameter.

To keep them looking nice, once or twice a year you can clean the tops good and put on another coat of wax.
I use that wax on my tables

 

These projects are a nice break from c/s.

 

I'm looking forward to seeing that, that will be sharp looking.

Those dimensions do seem kind of small but I guess that depends on how big and heavy you want to make it.

 

We'll do one which will give us a better idea, plenty of downed wood for more.
